Big Brother is Listening
Man, Tower is going to have a field day with this one.
Who uses a pay phone now other than drug dealers?
http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...commentSection
Payphone calls could be recorded
Quote:
If you happen to use a phone booth over the next few weeks, you may see a sticker message you have never seen before.
The sticker offers a warning to anyone using the phone that the number, the time, and the date of the call might be recorded, and the caller could be subpoenaed by police in a criminal investigation.
The idea comes from Alderman John Mar who says he's tired of getting complaints from residents who say dozens of phone booths are regularly used to make drug deals.

There are some GOLDEN comments as well.

Same goes for any private phone. If you are a suspected drug dealer the police can seek wire-taps and/or call history as part of their investigation.
Nothing new here.

Yeah, but not every cell conversation is recorded, or at least that is what they would have you believe .

Time to take a lesson from Portugal and just legalize it.
It worked there, it can work here.

I'm guessing that there is nothing new about cops requesting phone records from pay phones. I'm thinking this is more of a campaign to keep drud dealers from using pay phones, i.e. making their job tougher.

As long as the phone call itself isn't recorded I don't care.
I'll gladly let the government know who I'm calling and when.

That and I don't think they're talking about weed. This is about crack, coke, meth, heroin.

Coke and heroin are also part of that program...not sure about meth or crack (though crack is coke technically).

Because in Canada no drugs are decriminalized. Even though cops likely won't bust you for less than an ounce, having a scale, weapons etc the bill got scrapped when the Conservatives took power a few years ago.

Drugs dealers honestly would use pay phones? That seems um... ignorant considering how they would expose themselves in plain sight.
I would think that they would just use disposable pay-as-you-go phones from a 7-11 purchased by someone else with cash only (essentially untraceable and impossible to prove ownership)?

I wouldn't.
The government can go f itself.
Only way I tell them who I'm calling is if they get a warrant to force me too.
Otherwise they should stay the hell out of my private life. And that includes tracking my GPS.

If you're paranoid, don't buy a transmitting GPS (outside of GPS phones, do most units even transmit? I thought it was a passive technology...)
My suggestion to the people who are pissed off by this: get a bunch of friends together and a large back of quarters and dimes. Start calling people and striking up inane and pointless conversations, but drop random key words like "pickup" and "drop" and other drug trafficing terminology.
Some poor schmuck has to sit there and listen to these calls - might as well make it hard to hear through the noise :P

Why are people talking about the converstaions being recorded?
This has NOTHING to do with conversations being recorded, only that the cops could potentailly subpoena the phone records that show who was called and when, something that I'd be willing to bet quite a bit, that they could already do.

I have no problem with THIS. Provided they have the proper clearance, the police can monitor any phone call they want as far as I'm concerned. But they better not do it without a warrant.
My phone has GPS, but I set it to '911 only.'
