Glad you started this thread, I'm looking for a used car as well (although older than what you're looking for).
Can anyone offer me any advise on buying from a private seller vs a used car lot? It seems to me from the ads I've seen used car lots are pricier and a seem a bit less forthcoming about details such as km's. They just seem a bit shadier. Is this mistrust legitimate, or is there good deals to be had at used car lots?

The automobile industry has had to clean up its act in a very big way over the last few years.
Automotive dealerships are now required to be part of AMVIC (ALBERTA MOTORVEHICLE INDUSTRY COUNCIL).
All vehicles must go through a mechanical fitness report and that report must be provided to you. That report cannot be any older than 2 weeks old and must be certified by a registered automotive mechanic.
Insurance has become a big issue in the industry in that we are not allowed to "hide" things. If the customer becomes involved in an accident on their way home from the dealership and its proven that the dealer was at fault for not providing a proper mechanical inspection, there's hell to pay. And rightfully so.
Trying doing that in a private deal. Private deals do not have to disclose anything. period. buyer beware.
will yuo pay more at a dealership than a private sale?..maybe. but sometimes that isnt always the case.
I would be more inclined to purchase a vehicle from a dealer rather than a private. just for the peace of mind.

Wow, I'm sold. Seriously... nothing worse than buying a car with no history. Unless you're a gambler... in which case you might as well go to Regal Auctions.

Thanks. I'm not sure if this is the case in BC as well, I'll have to look into that.

you can always buy a vehicle in Alberta.
however, you will have to pay the PST when you go to register it and I am pretty confident that you will need to do an out of province inspection.
the out of province inspection is still something that I cannot wrap my head around. Out of country....sure..but why out of province. Do vehicles operate different in Saskatchewan than they do in Alberta. I dont get that one.

Going into BC I get it because they have emissions standards, but registering an out of province vehicle in AB...not sure about that.
Oh, and Carfax is your friend. We are currently in the market for a truck and I have found it useful!
