Put me in the "not neglect" camp.
Methanolic- what would you have done differently here?
Put some sort of lock on the tent zipper? What if there was an emergency in the middle of the night?
Had the parents sleep in shifts?
Tie the kid up or tie the kid to a parent?
I just can't think of a way the parents could have prevented this. And I would suggest you ask your parents about your "wandering off adventures before the age of 4", as I'm sure there is a story. For me, it was riding my trike to K-Mart when I was 3, and having a neighbour pick me up and drive me home.

While I appreciate Methanolic's old Dess impression, I don't find it as annoying. Am I insane or has a large crop of people with the "I don't know anything more than the tv told me, but let me tell you what really happened" attitude sprung up?

What worries me is that there are enough people out there that DO think this was "obviously" neglect. What happens when I have kids?
Methguy - some kids are more adventurous, fearless, and better escape artists than others. My guess is yours was a fairly good and relatively docile kid (that's not an insult, it's a guess).

Bah. No harm no foul.
Any parent who claims to have no 'holy crap I hope nobody calls child services' moments is delusional, or soon to be hearing from child services for being oblivious.
Besides. Every dad was proven mentally challenged the instant he convinced himself he could have a kid and still continue to have sex. That part is a given.

It would be interesting to live in a world where arguments and people are judged on their good sense alone, and not their socioeconomic background or ethnic credentials. Unfortunately the trend seems to be in the opposite direction.
