From what I;ve seen on Trader the old exploder- running- should get me $3000 clean. Most guys have them up there for $4000.

Honestly, this mechanic is not trying to screw me. He's a family friend and he is already trying to give me a discount. The $700 includes a $300 pump, the $150 diagnostic he just did, and the labour, so it's not that ridiculous IMO.

I'm just thinking maybe I should get something newer and more reliable.

I guess if you can afford it, go for it. I drive a '97 Jeep and I just put a grand into it this summer and I considered that perfectly fine, I bought it for $4K 4 years ago and other than tires and regular maintenance this is the first serious cash I've had to invest.

Sounds like my friend may be interested in buying it for a fair price so we'll see how that goes. If I can get $2k-$2.5K out of it and he fixes it on his own dime we might have a win/win here. Then I can get a smaller more efficient car to drive.

Decisions, decisions.

All right... very funny guys!!! I get it, I get it. I over reacted...

Anyways, back to the subject on hand.

I would suggest you buy another vehicle but keep the Explorer to repair yourself when you have time, then sell it.

Its not that difficult of a repair (and if you are hesitant I'm sure some people here will give you a hand). Go to the library and take out a Chiltons Repair book and look up how to replace the fuel pump on your vehicle and then go for it.

It will be a good learning experience and you will save a lot of money.

I had 2 Ford Explorers, a 1991 basic model that I drove for 3 years and then gave to our daughter when she was off to university. She drove it another 6 years, no major problems, just replaced tires and brakes.

I then had a 1994 Explorer XLT, that I drove until 2003. Again, replaced tires once, and I think brake pads or something.

When I sold it, the buyer wanted to take it to his mechanic to put it through some 79 spot check thing. It passed everything, even the water for rear windshield was in perfect working order.

So from my experience having owned 2 Ford Explorers, they are damned fine vehicles.

Edit: And hard to believe, but it was still on the original battery. I got $8500 when I sold it, I was happy with that price.

Just remember to eat the mint after you've siphoned the gas out.

$150 dollar diagnostic? I've also heard Auto value does it for free and even a regular mechanic would do it for less than $80...but $700 dollars total does sound reasonable.

I refuse to suck gas out of a tank anymore. To me its well worth it to go to Cdn Tire and by one of those cheap siphon tubes. God I hate the taste of gas.
