I can't say anything about the six from personal experience. I, like a good handful of people on this board, own a 3. I have not much, if anything, bad to say about it. Mazda has really upped the ante, as Toyota and Honda are usually the default choice for Japanese cars due to reputation. Mazda has chosen to market a more exciting product, and it has turned into massive success for them. They're real good cars too.
Some car people (including me) take Top Gear's word on almost everything. They do NOT like the Mazda 3 for some reason (I blame the European choice of engines). However, they have nothing but good things to say about the 6. As far as reliability, I haven't heard anything bad about them either, since that's what you seem to be mostly wondering. Good luck on the purchase.

We looked at the Mazda 6 before buying our Subaru Outback recently, and it seemed like a decent car. The main reason we didn't go for it was that the back seats are quite cramped, really only good for smaller kids, and when they're down (for more storage), there's only room for 4 to sit. My wife called it the 'mini-mini-van', since its like a reduced version. If it meets your needs, it seems like it would be a good choice. In the end we opted for the Outback so we could potentially sit 5 adults, but also have plenty of storage.

I have an '08 Mazda 6 GT sports. Although it's not the same as the Wagon6, mine has the same 2.3 litre 4-cylinder engine as the Wagon. What year are you looking at? The '08 has 212hp for the V-6 (not sure of earlier years). For me, this car has been extremely reliable and it very good on gas. Not to sure about the V-6, but l would suspect that it's pretty good as well. The V-6 is a ford made engine, while the 4 is the Japanese MZR model.
The supension kit is nice and durable and really takes corners well. Mine has dual stabilizer bars in the front and back, although I do have the sport model so I am not 100% sure if they are the same on the Wagon. But I know the main suspension is. I agree with Nuje, everyone and there mother has a 3. But the 6 is where it's at. If you read reviews of it online, virtually every review mentions almost the same things good that I would have to say.
-Great look and drivability
-LOADS of truck space. Obviously the Wagon has a ton of room, but even my sport model has massive amounts of room. (Hatchback style). Regular sedan is still decent.
-Awesome on Gas. For my 4 cylinder I get aprx 650-850kms per tank (56ltr). THe V-6 I am not sure, but many reviews state it is pretty good.
-Great sporty look on all models. The headlights wrap around the side of the car and really give it an agressive, sporty look. Back lights have sporty look and wrap around the side as well.
-Tons of headroom, especially in the backseats. Not sure of the exact dimensions, but everyone who sits in the back of mine says good things.
-The drivers consol has a really nice, almost futuristic look to it. Everything is withing a good distance. The lights for the dials and consol are this almost neon red glow to it. Personally I think it looks great, especially at night.
If you have any more questions, let me know. I absolutely love my 6 (prefer it over the RX-8 actually) and have nothing but good things to say about it. Good luck with your search, let me know if you found anything.

I think you're talking about the Mazda 5... The Mazda 6 is a car that can seat 5 people legally.
(I, like your wife, also call it the Mini-minivan... LOL)

I have a Mazda 6 Wagon GT GFX.
I looked around a lot for a wagon and ended up getting this. It can hold lots of cargo, but is fun to drive. I really like it.

Thanks for all the replies. From what I've heard the V6 isn't that great on gas.
Jonesy, have you checked your mileage?

Haven't recorded it, but I can get 700-750 km from a tank on the highway. Not sure of the tank size, maybe 60L, I guess that is about 8L/100km? (3.0L engine)
Much better mileage than my previous 3.3L van
Do it! It can go 200km/hr stock. Not bad for a wagon.

I could probably go faster than that stock. you're only limited by the speed limiter.

True, but the limiter IS there, so thats all she could do.
