How do you get the gun out of your locked gun locker fast enough to confront someone? Its the law to lock them up, also your ammo. Not trying to join a fight here, but I would wonder what happens if a Calgarian shot at a prowler?

Good point. I'm sure all the gun owners here have their firearms and ammo under lock and key.... being law abiding citizens and all.
As for shooting at a prowler, he'd probably get charged by the police unless he could prove to them that his life or the lives of others were in imminent danger.

I am reminded of a show, 60 minutes I think it was, about a couple who shot a young Japanese exchange student, who was on their doorstep, and holding a camera. They said they had trouble with "mexicans" in their neighbourhood, and thought he was a mexican, thereby felt justified in killing him. (He was looking for an address to a graduation party.) The couple was very upset that they hadn't got their handgun back yet.

It was a few years back, and was in the States so possibly Texas. I just couldn't believe how they were more worried about the gun, and not having killed this young man.

Well, the kid was Japanese, which meant the Mexican was still out there...

a cop friend of mine said in that situation, tell the police you were cleaning your gun (or about to clean) when the intruder confronted you.

This happened on an acreage this past week, a truck drove up and down a dead end road before pullling into a driveway. One of the guys (there were 2 of them) then went and knocked on the door. The 15 year old girl who was home didn't want to answer and she hid so he jumped back in the truck and drove off. Turns out they drove back down the road and parked the truck. They then went through the trees and smashed the glass out of the back door of the house thinking no one was home. The girl heard this and ran to the kitchen to grab a butcher knife. I think she was gonna hide but then they were right there so she just yealled at them. Something like "What are you doing here?" Thank God they bolted. Turns out the truck was stolen about an hour earlier in the NE, so they stole the truck and drove down south looking for places to rob. I don't know if they got caught or what.
