Google just rules. There's really no other way to put it than that.

There may be some quirks to different things they do, but it's an ever-evolving process. Things take time!

Edit: Fan-boyish, I know... but... oh well.

Not to derail, but I've got a quick question. Opinions on the best browser? I see this google chrome, seems to sound good, I'm using firefox now, it seems that this Opera? gets rave reviews left and right.

Are any resource hogs? Any security benefits to one over the other? Major speed differences? Thanks.

And I'm sure there is a better thread to throw this in. Point me that way and I'll have at 'er

Firefox, hands down.

Opera might be faster, Chrome is good as well, but I have experienced some conflicts with Win 7. IE is .... bad, but Firefox , especially 3.5 is fast, and due to add ons is totally customizable to make your experience what you want it to be.

It would also cost $3800 for the base model and still wouldn't be much of a gaming machine without a better graphics card and of course Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Seriously? I haven't met a game yet that I couldn't play on my 3.06GHz iMac with the 512MB 8800GT graphics card it came with. That includes Crisis.

(and the iMacs aren't even the expensive Mac Pros that I was referring to earlier...)

^ENOUGH!

Chrome OS FAQ posted yesterday.

We've been getting a number of questions in reference to our 'Introducing the Google Chrome OS' blog post, and so here are a number of your most frequently asked Qs – along with our As. We'll be sure to add more to this list as popular questions come in.

Is Google Chrome OS free?
Yes – Google Chrome OS is an open source project and will be available to use at no cost.

What companies is Google working with to support Google Chrome OS?
The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Among others, these companies include Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba.

I'm a developer – how can I work with you?
Thanks for your interest. Later this year, the Google Chrome OS code will be open sourced. We're looking forward to working with the open source community and making our own small contribution to the great work being done out there. Please stay tuned.

Does it run MS Office? I hate Office as much as any *nix evangelist, but it's what the business world runs on. I honestly don't know, I just assume that support for Office and it's formats is borderline at best on the linux based netbooks.

Plus, trying to convince any of my friends/family to use a computer based on a "nerd" operating system is a futile endeavor.

Technically, IE 8 is superior to Firefox. Hell, the Mozilla foundation is scrambling to get parallel processing into Firefox simply because Microsoft beat them to the plate (mildly embarrassing in retrospec).

Still, IE 8 feels marginally faster so I'm not convinced it's really a big deal. FF3.5 is fast enough for me and it is the only browser that has Firebug.

Opera was designed by blind monkeys. I cannot fathom how anyone could possibly prefer that browser and it's ridiculously designed interface.

Thanks...

Some of us really like Opera.

I've been using it for quite some time and prefer it over ANY other browser.

One thing I dig about Opera is the saved form fields thing. You know, where you can drag stuff over to different fields repeatedly.

I used to have to do a lot of updates to an online pharmaceutical DB, and used Opera for the really repetitive stuffs.

You'll need to go to Mac Pro for a 8 core 32 GB setup that you were mentioning, and you still have to go up $2099 before you can even considered any serious gaming.

Indeed, the 8 core 32GB setup is a Mac Pro. I was making a completely different point with that, though. PC users tend to live in this dream world where Macs are just toy machines without any real power. 8 x 3GHz cores, with 32GB of ram doesn't sound like much of a toy to me.

As for the money thing, it's an old and tired argument. It's no different than buying a car. You can save a few bucks and buy yourself an AMC Pacer... or you can buy something made out of quality parts that will last longer and actually retain its value.

Either way, there is nothing that anyone will ever say that can convince me that Macs aren't better than PCs. I'm someone who has spent 15 years supporting PCs and managing corporate networks, too - so it's not like I'm talking out of my ass when I state my opinions on the subject.

I'm not saying that anyone else should agree or disagree with me. I'm just stating my own opinions that have been formed through years and years of my own first-hand experience. Really, I have no worries about what any other person does with their computing needs. Along the way, however, I do like to take a few moments to help dispel some of the more nonsensical myths that PC users have perpetuated for (what feels like) forever.

Your assumption is wrong.

Like a mac? Or an iPhone? Chrome OS is linux too, why do you think that will be a viable alternative to XP? Linux distros can act and look any way the developers want it to.
