Sony bought hits for certain artists by purchasing radio play:

Not exactly shocking.

Been happening for a long time.

This was the main topic of a 1978 episode of WKRP in Cincinnati.

How could "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" not be a hit?

At least there's enough good recorded music out there from the past that you don't have to even bother listening to the tepid manufactured crap they put out nowadays.

There's good music recorded every single day. You just have to know where to find it.

I don't know why this is so shocking or why everyone is in a huff about it. Why is it so bad for a music company to pay to get songs played. Radio is pretty much just advertising for albums, so if you really think about it, why should companies get the airtime for Free?

Because it would take away spins from what could be a more deserving song. It sets an unfair precedent and is a major disadvantage to those that connot afford to pay.

Yeah but life's not fair. The radio station isn't providing a public service to get the best music out there. Even without payolas they don't get it right too often. Ultimately they are in it to make money.

I don't like the idea either because it's sneaky and underhanded (and Good Charlotte) but I've always wondered why it's illegal.

Actually you're right, it just seems like the cream doesn't rise to the top as much anymore. You really have to search for the good stuff.
