Default Car insurance question - what is cheap to insure?

A friend of mine is looking to buy a used car and is wondering what is relatively new (i.e. not an old beater) but is among the most inexpensive cars to insure. Does anyone know this information off-hand or where I should look?

Thanks CP

I pay 600 a year for a Ford Ranger with no collision.

As for finding out what cars are cheapest to insure, maybe call a broker?

I have a feeling the minivan may be not ... their cup of tea.

If you are wondering about the cost of the collision portion of your insurance, a lot of it is based on vehicle safety tests and what the results are from the various crash tests the vehicles are put through.

So when you have narrowed your search down to 3 or 4 vehicles, go on line and check out the reliablitily and safety ratings for the year and model of the vehicles.

And at that point, phone your insurance company, give them the year and models of vehicles you are interested in, they will give you quotes.

I pay $800 per year for a 2009 Hyundai Sante Fe, that includes all collision, 2M personal liability, $500 deductible, 5 year full replacement cost of the vehicle.

I pay $825 a year - full coverage, minus the glass - for a 05 Ford Escape.

I don't know if the engine even matters that much. I think it's pretty much straight stats.

How often do claims happen on a certain type of car?

I had a Cobalt SS. At the time I sold it I got $14K for it. 205HP. The insurance was MUCH higher than the car I replaced it with, an Audi S4, bought for $40K and 340HP. It really doesn't make sense, until you stop to think of how many 16 year olds are crashing S4's vs how many are crashing Cobalts. The only guys that buy S4's are 50 year old soccer dad's and me, so they don't see too many claims.

I have one and I agree, my Dad is the Primary, and I am on as a secondary and we pay like $200/month or something close. I was choked when my friend told me he pays less than $110/month for his. Given my vehicle is 2006 and his is in the 90's. But still, what the hell.

And that is with the Drivers Ed discount. I think I am getting ripped off big time.
