It's nice to get cards from people actually, shows they put some thought into you. Obviously the more personalized the better.

I thought the same way...

Till my sister died this year, and for the 6 weeks that followed I received a flood of cards through the mail reaching from as far back from friends i haven't heard from in years.... I was very glad those people wasted their money on it, really helped

This. Or just print off a picture which fits the theme/person and write something on the back. They can then keep the picture and put it up somewhere.

I also find certain people buy you the wrong card. I cringe when I see one with script writing. You can bet money it's going to be sappy.

I have a friend who paints the odd watercolour and he's taken his heavy stock paper and cut it up into cards. This idea I also like.

Some cards are a waste of money, but others like trip aces and a pair of kings are money in the bank.

I like to think that the sensible people in my life would skip the card and use the $4 or $5 dollars that a card would cost toward upgrading my gift.

Birthday? Valentines? Christmas? Meh. I never know what to do with the card. Its not like they're made out of chocolate or anything.

Most cards are meaningless when accompanied by gifts. I, however, have a long standing tradition of sending my girlfriend several times a year these hard to find, small brand cards that she loves and they mean a lot to her. They're less than $4 each so I think it's a nice token when doing that for someone special but otherwise I agree.

I read something the other day. It was in one of the those one page sheets you see around in restaurants, etc that give your horoscope, tell jokes, and have little known facts or statistics.

Anyways, it said that women buy 95% of the greeting cards sold in North America.

Apparently the statistics back up your statement.

I think there should be a "Michael Jackson Memorial Day" where we all give cards with MJ's picture on it to loved ones before its too late.

My wife always buys cards for Birthdays, Christmas, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day, etc. and I've been sucked into this as well. I'm stuck in a horrible downward card spiral. I don't know how to stop it! I swear, a little piece of me dies everytime I step into Hallmark.

who are these 5%?

i don't think i've ever bought a card, but the few times i get one, it makes me smile. i'm not going to get overly upset if someone gives me a card.

i'm lazy as hell though. i don't usually gift wrap either, and if i do, its newspaper followed but tape. (i don't even pick out the comic section either). usually, i just hand them the shopping bag (and sometimes i forget to even take out the receipt)

i was gonna ask who buys flowers, but then i remember i bought flowers for a girlfriend once. she asked me to pick up some fruit for her (she was coming home from work and sounded sort of bitchy) and flowers were right beside the checkout, so i thought "sure, why not, save me a from being a victim of her bad day" - and it worked!

Flowers are GOOD!

Apology? Romance? Birthday? Spontaneous surprise? Its all good good. They smell nice, pretty up the house and make a girl feel like a million bucks. Even cheap flowers. (You can sometimes pick up flowers at Safeway that cost less than a Hallmark card.)

As an added bonus, flowers have a definite end-point. When they die - compost 'em. None of that awkward holding on to it wondering when a decent disposal interval has elapsed.

Just my $0.25. There's bound to be a woman out there who loves cards and hates flowers.

I hate cards AND flowers.

Can I eat or wear flowers? No? Well then, don't give them to me.

Yes, I realize that I am an ingrate.
