My point had nothing to do with the color of their skin... but with the fact that they appeared to be non-native born Canadians (ie. immigrants) who continue to try and do business like they were still living in the country of their birth.

When I was selling my tent trailer I had all sorts of people call with all kinds of offers. The guy who bought it from me had asked the best way possible. He said "I know you probably put in a slightly higher price than what you would be willing to settle for. Rather than us going back and forth and haggling, why don't you just tell me what you had in mind for the lowest price you would be comfortable letting ti go for." I told him my price, and he agreed to it.

My favourite is when they expect some kind of discount because they're paying in cash.

When I was selling my old iPhone for $400, one guy was such a knob. He sent me the same email 4 times. Something like, "If I pay cash, will you take $200?"

Finally, I answered the guy back with, "After careful consideration of your offer, I have decided to sell the phone for $100 to a guy who is paying my personal cheque. Cash is just such an inconvenience. Regards."

Like seriously. I get that it's their culture, but it's not our culture. Just like it would be rude for me to go to some places in Asia and look people in the eye, it's rude to come to Canada and offer me half of what I'm selling it for.

Regardless of culture, though, it's completely idiotic to expect a discount for paying in cash.

Rerun seems to be angry at a lot of stuff in this world. People e-mailing him low-ball offers, 11-year old daughters saying that they loved their dads at funerals, etc.

Thats a favorite of mine as well. A buddy of mine is a car salesman and he gets that all the time. WTF does he care how they pay, the dealership would rather you not pay cash all up front they make more money in the long term and a big company can handle not getting payment instantly.

When I go to my local Chinese restaurant for a family sized take out, the little Chinese guy taking orders always asks "You pay cash, yes?" When I do, I always get a discount and more food. I'm pretty sure the money also goes into the cash register of his right hand pocket.

I think its to save on Credit Card processing fees. It makes sense at a smaller buisness, but not selling privately.

Every chinese food flyer I have have similar cash discounts.

In China, if you are paying more than 1/4 of their original offering price, you're being ripped off. If you don't like someone's offer, either counter offer or just be polite and say no thanks. They're not trying to be rude to you. No need to be rude to them. Just say no thanks and move on.

You're not in China anymore. If I was an immigrant living in China, or even just a visitor, I would refrain from doing things or acting in a manner that may offend the Chinese.

I don't mind people trying to bargain, but I agree with the original poster that some of the people you come across on craigslist are terrible. I was selling a Wii on there a few months ago, and one guy offered me $5. I wasn't sure if that was better or worse than the guy who offered to trade me the amp from his car stereo.

I don't blame people for not discounting for paying cash, but I don't think it's crazy to ask. There are a lot of businesses/people who prefer cash to avoid paying taxes, avoid credit card fees, or avoid the chance of having a cheque bounce from someone that you met on the cesspool that is craigslist.

Any kind of business, and small businesses especially, generally like cash, even if they do business above the table. Credit, Debit, and the banks take a percentage cut. Whatever that percentage cut is, it certianly cuts out of the bottom line.

As for haggling, it's an underused art in this country. I always haggle for cars, furniture, electronics, stuff like that.

I should start haggling for other things, pretty much anytime a salesperson has to help you out.

It pretty much should be a crime to pay the posted price for electronics at a place like A&B sound. Often you can get up to 40% off (or even more) just by asking.

Haggling has never really worked at Future Shop, but a couple of months ago, I got $50 off the vacuum cleaner I bought there just by asking if he could give me a better price.
