Just looking for something fairly simple, don't need the DVD screen whatever that seems to be all the rage amungst the young'uns these days. Does anyone know where I would be able to find something at a fairly reasonable price.

Thanks.

I have been there a few times and looked, but most of what is being sold is that stupid DVD player in the dashboard crap. Not saying it isn't cool, but come on who really needs a DVD player in their car is the drive into work that boring in the morning.

Although the posters there do make me feel much smarter.

Just go to Best Buy or Future Crap or even Crappy Tire, they have the basic stuff ranging from $100-200. Just dont let the minions who work there put it in for you though. Do it yourself or go to a reputable shop. Do it at Future Shop and you WILL regret it when they blow your battery.

Would you take the necessary precautions to do the job properly if you were some punk kid in high school working at Future Shop's stereo installation department for minimum wage and no commission? I don't think any of them even keep their eyes open when on the job.

I second self installation. Just buy a wiring harness and a dash kit (and possibly an antenna adapter). Its much easier than you think.

I third that. I just bought a new truck & was reluctant to do it myself for fear of blowing some fancy new circuit the truck may have. I've always owned older vehicles prior to this & used to do it with one of those probes with the light in it, and patience.

Someone recommended a wiring harness and I did it no problem. Two hours of my time saved me whatever they charge to do it at an installation shop, and the inconvenience of dropping off my ride & having to pick it up whenever they're done.

As for decks, I bought a JVC cd/mp3 with a flip down face & fancy color graphics three years ago that I like so much, I transplanted it into my new ride. It was $250 3 years ago, so the current model can't be much more.
Some popele don't like JVC, but I've got nothing but good to say about them.

I just got mind at wal-mart for 200 bucks on sale, a Sony Exploid or somthing like that, and if you install urself make sure to get the wiring set. I didn't and I blew 4 fuses and a speaker. I then paid radioshack to put it in so don't do what I did.

The brand of deck all depends on what you want it to do.
Do you want mp3 capability? Going to run any subs/amps? What vehicle is it going into? Do you simply want to replace the stock one? Going to add satellite radio in the future?

I bought one last summer, and all I do is burn one mp3 cd with hundreds of songs on it. That way I never have to bring cd's with me and/or plug in an mp3 player.

I recommend a pioneer or Alpine player. I'm not too fond of the Sony decks. But the "you get what you pay for" saying is certainly true. As for the difficulty in installing yourself? It's a breeze. It may seem scary at first, but since the first time, I have done tons of installs along with helping friends do theirs (don't tell friends you know how).

If the one you are replacing is the same size, then it's even simpler. If it's not, then you need an adapter (bought at the same place you get the stereo). Adapters are easy to install and come with great instructions.

Second is the wiring. Get a wiring harness that is made for your vehicle make/model and year. Then all you have to do is solder the wires from the stereo harness to the harness you just bought. Then you can simple unplug the stock stereo and plug in your new one. Slide the new deck into the slot till you hear the click, then voila. A wiring kit isn't necessary as usually the stock wires will be ok. It is recommended to run a different power and ground though. But it will probably be fine without it.

Well the automobile is a good ol' Hyundai Accent and I don't have anything along the lines of amps hooked up at the current time. The stereo that is in there right now isn't a stock radio that came with the car so that really shouldn't be a huge issue, or at least I don't think that it would be. I was leaning towards the MP3 CD player just because of the ease of use factor, and it is something along the lines of 40 dollars more.

The thing is I just don't have a bloody clue as to how to get the broken one out of there now. I am thinking the use a big hammer way might not be the best idea.

EDIT: Nevermind they charge. I've found great free sites before though.

Get an MP3 one, I've seen them in various ads for under $150.

I would recommend an Aiwa deck from A&B sound. The brand is actually made by Sony and is good quality, and loaded with features.
The best thing about them is that they all have a digital aux input on the front. This makes it really easy if you want to play and Mp3 player or minidisc through your car. This way you get the best quality sound and it's still pretty cheap. Much better than FM transmitters. The deck I bought was only $120 and I love it.
Looks good, way more features than most cheap decks and I can have my 40gigs of music in there whenever I want it. B-)

That's right ... 4 year bump.

FM transmitters have finally run out of favor with me and I need an aux input for my car. Here's my issue though: I lease and I'm told that while I can have a different stereo put in, I have to have a professional do it. So if I was to have futureshop/best buy do it for me, does anybody have a ballpark idea of what that would cost? If not futureshop/bestbuy, does anybody have somewhere else they'd recommend?

If you buy a moderate priced stereo, they will sometimes throw a basic install in for free (ie, no subs, amps, or other speakers)
I'm happy with my $120 JVC which has an aux input and usb on the front so I can control an ipod.

They lie when they say that. I've done this for myself and others before on leased vehicles. Just keep the stock deck and put it back in when you are done with the car. Take the one you bought on to the next vehicle, or sell it.

For the best sound, you want the Ipod adaptor that comes out of the back of the deck, hopefully to the glove box. With this feature, you can control the ipod through the deck itself. I have a 30 gig full time in my glove box. I also have satellite hooked up under the hood, which is also controlled by the deck. This is the way to go, for sure. The sound is top notch and there is always something good on. I have a pioneer deck, they go for around 250 to 300 (for the ipod/satellite system).
