HA! I knew there was a reason I didn't get Roger's "great deal" ($~130 up front, plus $100+ fee for replacement) of an extended warranty.

I bought my phone at Futureshop. Got insurance through them - $10 a month off your Credit card but if there is a problem with your phone they just exchange it instead of worrying about the problem.

And when they get there new stock of 3GS, in 3 weeks, something mysteriously is going to happen to mine. ($100 gets the upgraded phone!)

Okay, I bought a used G5 Powermac yesterday and have spent the day configuring and moving files from the G4. Last thing I just tried was the tethering with the iPhone. Got it working, but wasn't impressed with the speed at all. Unfortunate. I only check 3 web sites daily and read e-mail, so my internet usage on the cable modem is 4 GB/month MAX. I was hoping that I could just drop the cable modem and use my 6GB on the phone. And I guess that plan would be blown out of the water come January anyway once Rogers starts putting on an additional charge for tethering.

Quick question for all the iPhone users out there (sorry if this is a fata, have not gone thru the entire thread, it's too big!) - I'm down to choosing between the HTC Dream and the iPhone....do any of you have any thoughts to offer as current iPhone users? They're similar phones to me except I like the HTC for the actual keyboard - I find trying to text using a touch screen very clumsy.

To choose against the iPhone for that reason only tho feels like I'm going to ignore the VHS of smartphones to choose a Beta in the HTC (kinda stretching the analogy but you know what I mean, I hope)....so I'm looking for opinions from the folks who use 'em, am I being swayed by the cult of awe that has sprung up around the iPhone? or are they that good?

Yes, they're that good. Before the 3GS was released I think the number of iPhone/3G & iPod Touch's sold were 40 million? The best part (and often overlooked if you haven't used one) is the App store. IMO the apps are what makes the iPhone.

As for the keyboard, I don't think anyone is or was comfortable with it immediately. It takes a week or two to get used to it then you'll wonder why you had so much trouble with it. Trust the autocorrect.

I'll answer your question with another question. Close your eyes and imagine it's 2001. I want to buy an mp3 player. Should I get one of those fancy ipod things or should I get an iriver? Both are said to be of great quality, but which will I like down the line?

That's pretty much the same thing you're asking here. These things aren't selling off the chain because everybody is a fanboy ... the iPhone is a very strong device. Yes the other phone you mention is awesome as well, but the app store is the deal killer here. It's growing exponentially and things are going to get incredible over the next year or two.

Nobody likes the touch keyboard at first ... it becomes second nature after a bit.

It does not.

Even super manly is gay.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I would love to get a ruling by MRCboiguy to see if his radar pings on this.

My eventual goal is to have MRC react as if ice water has been poured down his back at the very mention of my name.

Personally.. I don't get the whole deal about having to have a real keyboard. The buttons are actually smaller and I have a harder time with them than on the iPhone. You really do get used to the touch keyboard pretty quickly. Plus, you don't have to worry about the mechanical buttons of a real keyboard. It's personal preference, but most people who end up buying an iPhone rather than just playing with one for a few minutes, tend to enjoy using it and I don't hear too many complaints about the keyboard.

Yeah now that I'm used to it I prefer the iPhone keyboard over, say, a blackberry keyboard.

Is that really the reaction you are going for? Not something more sublimal and perhaps a bit closeted?

just kidding. Giving you a hard time (insert joke here)

The 3.0 update could be a big help to keyboard lovers. Perhaps not for the quick access kind of keyboard, but I'd love to see a roll up keyboard connect via bluetooth for those times when you need to hammer out a long email or document.

When I make a gay joke, being subliminal is not my primary concern.

got a demo iPhone from our local rogers rep last Thursday. Testing it out for work to see if we want to migrate over from BB. Was not a huge fan of the keyboard day 1 but i am getting used to it and my speed is starting to come up.

I am liking it so far.. especially the whole here is a free iPhone with demo line and data for as long as you think you need it to see if it will work for your business.

That's a pretty sweet deal, I didn't realize they'd do that. What are your thoughts on the email thus far? I've never used a BB for any extended period of time and most talk about the email when comparing.

Okay. I'm having a horrendous time getting any push e-mail to work. I was told that my gmail account wouldn't work because Google refuses to push to an Apple device. I created a yahoo account and it just doesn't want to work. The instructions say that it pushes automatically, but I'm getting nothin'.

Apparently there is a way of tricking gmail to push, but it requires having mobile-me. Which I was considering getting for the find-phone feature and auto sync. If I was forced to use it to get push e-mail, that would be the tipping point. But I'd rather find a free means first.
