^^^ Wow, what kind of deposits are you guys getting for bottles up there? B.C. is kind of a far commute to collect recyclables, no?

But like I said... Somehow I don't think it's the blue boxes themselves bringing this trouble. It seems like storing cans in garbage bags beside the homes is. Did people not store cans before? What is so different about the blue boxes that are increasing crime?

Oh, come on, its not like it was as bad as this:

I got up and looked over my fence and saw 3 young guys (20-25ish) rooting through everbody's recycle bins, then I saw one particulary lanky scum-bag test the garage door of the person who lives directly across the alley from me! ... I was a bit shocked. Then he proceded to hike up into my neighbours yard, in between the fence and the garage.
I was pee'ed off now!... I yelled from my yard "Hey! .. ######! .. That's a Cops house (truth) and you better pray to God he's not home!" ... Punk replies ... "I've been in here many times! .. Relax!" .."I'm just looking for empties" ... to which I replied... "Get the F$%@!! out of this alley and don't come back!" I was at my sisters house last weekend and I saw 2 natives carrying huge garbage bags walking down her alley and they were also trolling the blue bins. She said.. "I've never seen that before". I'm not a snob or an elitist, but I'm pretty sure if these people keep finding "treasure" in my recyle bin, they will be back every week! I also know that the temptation to check garage doors, gates, back doors etc.. will increase rapidly! I am NOT about to start keeping my bin in my yard! ..(They will only hop the fence to check it, and maybe discover nobody is home, and then what?) ..It will stay in the alley and it will NEVERhave any items that can be returned to a depot for a refund! Moral of the story: DO NOT PUT "RETURN FOR DEPOSIT" ITEMS IN YOUR BLUE BIN! Suggestion: If you are the type of person who does not take "return for deposit" items back to the depot yourself, Please, Please, find a scout troop, hockey, soccer, baseball team, or community effort of some kind, that will be more than happy to come and collect from you on a weekly basis. PS: I live in a South West community (circa 1960) that has been great for me and my Family, I will not tolerate this increase in potential harm to my Family or property. I will definitely be bringing this up at my Com. Assns. next meeting. I've worked very hard (blue collar) to provide the best environment that I can for my Family and if this persists, I will call the City of Calgary and tell them to come and get their "blue bin" because I no longer want to participate......and you can kepp my freakin' $8 per month fee!!! RANT OFF!

Bums don't wake me up at 5am on a Saturday, or if they do I know they're taking away my trash as opposed to crapping all over everything.

You won't be saying that when they start pushing their shopping carts down your alley at 5:00.

I have no problems if people leave bottles and cans for bottle pickers but it's not just that. People are now coming into yards and casing neighbourhoods for bags on the sides of houses, garages and sheds. The first story I posted above, the guy knew I was home and knew there is a Rotwieller alarm and he accessed the side of our house via the neighbours porch. I know that I shouldn't be storing them on the side but I keep them there for minor sports teams when they come by. I always have a stash ready.

He was also confrontational and if I see him around here, his hybrid civic will be in my recycle bin after I dismantle it with a Louisville Slugger.

The exact same thought went through my head! I'd very likely have taken a baseball bat to his hippie sled if that were me.

I was thinking lately that you could reduce your cities homeless population by getting rid of deposits on beverage containers. Some of the homeless would move to different municipalities because this is how they make thier living. And if I am paying for a blue box program which makes recycling convenient and easy then I shouldn't be paying to be encouraged to recycle.

As well people taking bottles from the blue bins is stealing the money collected by the city in deposits is used to subsidize the program if these revenues aren't high enough the cost of the program goes up. If a famility drinks 8 liters of milk a week that 16 milk containers a month or $2 a month or 25% of the cost of the program.

So if this becomes common and a significant % of the bottles are stolen the cost of the program would go up by as much as 50%

You could probably eliminate all lawyers by just not having any laws, too. What could possibly be the downside?

Well, then I guess I'll have to start the thread "So...Who Shot A Bum With An Air-Rifle This Morning?"

In Halifax they have a blue BAGS instead of blue BINS (or at least did when I lived there). Now *THAT* was a mess. Since people would tie the bags up tight, the homeless would rip the bags open, take what they wanted and leave the rest on the sidewalk.

If home owners are stupid enough to leave $$$ recyclables (Milk jugs, bottles cans, etc...) in their blue bins they deserve to be picked though.

Are people really that rich and lazy? We may a monthly fee for the city to collect the recyclables, then the city makes even more money off your cans and what not.

Moral of story: Do not place cans and bottles in your blue bin.
If there is nothing to collect, these "Trolls" will move onto other neighbourhoods, where the people don't return their empties.

Why would they keep rummaging IF there is nothing to be found...

Aye, but before you sing the familiar refrain of personal responsibility, am I supposed to rummage through my neighbors recycling to ensure he didn't put any bottles in his blue bin?

Growing up in Toronto, we didn't have deposits on cans/bottles so we would throw everything into the blue box, and the city would simply come and take it away. There was nothing of any value in the boxes, so no one would go through them.

I'm happy that curbside recycling has finally been introduced here (even though my townhouse/condo isn't included), but obviously there's some ramifications of this to be dealt with.

It pisses me off because I know many Scout troops in Calgary get a lot of their funding from bottle drives. So these punky trolls are not only causing neighbourhood nuisance but they are indirectly stealing from the Scouts and removing their ability to go camping and so forth.

Imagine some little Beaver or Cub comes to your door asking for bottles and you have to send him away saying "I had some I wasn't going to return myself but some urchin took them all away."

Aye. And the recovery % left a lot to be desired. So it has been changed:

2. Can I still put LCBO alcohol beverage containers in the blue bin?
Quote:
Yes. The Blue Bin Program has not changed. You can continue to put all of your glass bottles, bag-in-box, Tetra Pak containers, plastic bottles, and aluminum and steel containers in your blue bin and they will be recycled. However, you will forfeit the deposit (10 or 20 cents depending on the size of container) that you paid at the time of purchase.

IIRC, In Ontario you get your deposit back on alcohol containers if you take them back to the LCBO but there are no independent recycle depots. Since you have fewer options for taking them back and only alcohol containers have a deposit, people in Ontario are more inclined just to put them in the blue bin. And presumably, there are fewer urchins trolling for vessels of value.

My boys' troop made thousands from a bottle drive this year (in an inner city community filled with hobos). More $ than they know what do do with.
