BS. They will never get another offer on this "prime land" from anyone but the city, who in the hell else want to buy land on a native reserve? What, are they going to sell the land to developers instead and build "native estates" the newest outlying Calgary suburb? I am thinking not.

These goofballs want to try and squeeze us after allowing that rat hole casino be built ? Again, BS. If I was the city I would play serious hard ball with these arseholes.

It is a complete and utter joke that this has dragged on for, like, 60 years... Only in wishy-washy Calgary would this take so long.

Christ... the deal to the natives was worth a half BILLION dollars, and the band rejected it?

Just build through the weaselhead, deny any access to reserve land from the highway unless they pay for it themselves, and let them rot.

That's the thing that pisses me off. They strung us along for so long only to vote it down. But at the same time, we could have been a hell of a lot more pro active and had this ironed out 20 years ago. At least we wouldn't be at this point where we need the road pretty much ASAP and now we have to go and make all new plans, which will put it back another couple of years.

Here's my two cents..

Why should they be obligated to give up reserve lands? It's the city's own stupid fault for not having the infrastructure in place that would support our population today. It's not Tsuu Tina's fault the city expanded right up to their doorstep and is now scrambling like a bunch of bumbling idiots, to build a road that should have been built a LONG time ago. This is just another example of how flakey and stupid the city is. Did they not plan for growth and expansion way back when? If this city had any sort of long-term infrastructure plan in place it would have had this road (or a road similar) built a long, long time ago without having to cut through any reserve lands. In all their wisdom did they not think Calgary would one day be million+ people? This city has the traffic problems it has today because it was POORLY planned to begin with. When a city of over a million has only one major freeway (Deerfoot) there's a bigger problem that extends far beyond just buying land off an Indian reserve for a ring road (a ring road which, in my opinion, is just a band-aid for a bigger traffic problem that this city has).

And all of that is irrelevant to this issue.

We're talking about one side attempting to negotiate in good faith, and another that keeps rejecting because of its own greed.

The best answer at this point is to cut them out as much as possible. Let the band use its casino profits to pay for everything the province and feds were willing to pay.

Well, I'm sure nobody can speak for either side unless they are: a) a Tsuu T'ina member or b) a member of City council. All I know is there's always two sides to the story and whatever we do hear is only what is told to us. There's gotta be a bigger reason as to why this has been stalled for so long. Who knows. Maybe it's greed, maybe it's something else.

The City of Calgary really has no jurisdiction in this case. The Province was willing to pay for the land, but it would have been up to Ottawa to approve the sale.
Thats the problem if you are dealing with a developer you need the deal to be done fast and get shovels in the ground instead you have to go through a body that doesn't work summers shuts down once a year for elections and is just another layer of beurocracy preventing development on a reserve.

If the act was changed and the bands could act like any other land owner this deal would likely happen and you would see tremendous development along the corridor.

I am so tired of people throwing the greed word around all the time. In my opinion it has nothing to do with greed. What more could they want?

It has to do with their right to vote how they choose. We all knew that the they would vote against it.

It is my impression that the "nation" will always go against what the 'white' man wants.

Then why not just say so - say "We will never give up this land for any price"

Then the world can at least move on.

Hasn't there been a big breakthrough in these negotiations every 3 or 4 years for the past 2 decades?
