How much are VIP tickets? Let me talk to my buddy, because at last years V-fest he just gave me and my friends the "worker" braclets, which allows you to go almost everywhere. There wasn't one person who turned me down anywhere with that braclet on. We just walked around back stage where all the bands wer hanging, drank a crap load of free beer that was set out for the bands, and went right to the side of the stage to watch the bands, and no one said a word.

Have a look at Flameswin's post, it's pretty apparent our Vfest had nowhere near the talent of some of the others. Maybe it's my taste in music, but I was pretty disappointed with what came.

Very few large tours and even less small tours hit up Perth. Australia gets in on tours as part of the Japan leg for the most part, and going to Perth costs them a ton in terms of moving equipment etc. You can do the East Coast relatively easily, it's not much different than doing any other tour once you get there and has 3-4 large centers to play. Perth is isolated, a tour that hits Perth is making a one off stop, and that's not really common. Outside of the festivals you pointed out you don't see very many tours to Australia period, it's just way too expensive to justify it for most bands.
As for the Calgary Vfest vs. other Vfest's, people need to realize that the name slapped on it has nothing to do with who's playing. Vfest isn't a tour, it's a series of one off shows.

I dunno about that, I went to Vfest in Sydney this year and their headliners were the Killers and Snowpatrol... not much to write home about. The plus was you could drink anywhere you wanted, but I still had to shell out $100 for it, and it was only a one day thing.
Big Day Out this year wasn't too great either, I can't even remember who was headlining, but I remember no even considering buying a ticket after I saw the lineup.
Just depends on the year I think.

Yup, my friends in Perth are ALWAYS complaining that they always get the shaft when it comes to bands touring in Australia, and when they do come the tickets are ridiculously expensive. Calgary is definitely luckier when it comes to getting big names to come on tour.

VIP wrist bands were white last year (or blue? I can't remember I was pretty drunk). I made one out of a cigarette pack turned inside out, and wandered over to that area set up stage right and walked right in. Easy peasy.
I had one of those passes to the second mini stage that was behind all the crowds, but all that got me was free rock band, and long beer lines.

Oh . . . its a rock concert.
So much for truth in advertising.
Of course something called virginfest would need unlimited wireless internet and all of the world of warcraft memberships on the planet.

Not really. Eddie Vedder just takes the chance to act like a ###### and stop playing music for 20 minutes worth of a political monologue. I don't think I'd pay to see Pearl Jam again.

What did you expect, they've been a highly political band since the beginning.
Easily one of the best live bands out there, Calgary is lucky to have a premium act on the bill.

You're thinking of babylonfest. Bfest for short. My house every Friday, and it's $300 as well.

Well for some reason, I expect to hear music when I go to a MUSIC concert. If you want to get political at a concert, sing a song with some political meaning to it.
I've been to many concerts put on my "politically-minded artists" (Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Michael Franti, etc.) and they didn't feel the need to ###### out and belittle their audiences.

How exactly does he belittle his audience? What show did you go to?
Fact of the matter is, you won't get any better value than Pearl Jam as far as rock shows go. Amazing live show, long sets, great musicianship, great songs, and a lead singer who has the balls to say what he feels instead of being a dancing monkey. If you don't like that, then yeah, Pearl Jam probably isn't for you.

I saw them at Bonnaroo last year. It was a tremendous show until Eddie literally cut a song short so he could dive into a twenty minute diatribe about oil prices, taking several shots at Southerners along the way.
Good dfor Eddie that he "has the balls" to do that kind of thing, but it received a collective groan from the audience, and half his band took off until he was done. Honestly, especially at a festival like that, the classier thing to do would be to keep your mouth shut and realize that people didn't pay upwards of $700 to hear you rant.
It pisses me off to no end when musicians pull that crap. If that's what you're going to do at your show, then advertise it ahead of time as "Eddie Vedder's Stump Speech" and see how many people shell out the coin for it.
EDIT: And I write all of this as a pretty big Pearl Jam honk.

So glad it isn't Tool. I am away at a wedding that weekend. Missing Pearl Jam isn't a big deal. One of those "meh" bands.

Hey, I didn't say you couldn't like Pearl Jam. I personally don't like their music. I don't hate them the way I do Coldplay or Britney Spears, that is to say at least their music has substance and isn't just pure crap. To me they are like RHCP, I have heard good things about them and I'm sure they make genuine music that is great and people love them but I just think it sounds like crap.
