I will say, I would have a tough time approving it if it meant my grandparents grave would have to be moved for a road.

For some money isn't everything and that land is irreplaceable. Also, the Tsuu T'ina doesn't need this project...the city does.
But if I were tasked with thinking about the welfare of the Tsuu T'ina people I think that this offer has a lot of upside for future generations.
Also, if it fails there would be tremendous goodwill lost...

If it meant that your grandkids would have a 'better' (using the western sense of the word) life don't you think that maybe your Grandmother would approve? Especially if their burial site was treated with respect?

I agree to a certain point. But I have been to a few houses on the reserve; and a lot of them were in need of some serious TLC. Plus there was another issue in the news recently about members living in the condemned housing left behind by the military, and how they were being forced out.
So I look at it as not just being about money, but securing a future for yourself, your children, etc.

Yeah if your grandparents really were burried on the road allowance for Stoney Trail then I could understand.
Something tells me this arguement against approval falls under the same arguement that gets trotted out as if it were some kind of trump card everytime someone wants to do anything near or on native lands (Or even on crown land hundreds of KMs from any native reserve).
Burrial grounds, most likely are losely defined as "Well this land has been used by Natives for generations going back thousands of years and certainly somewhere on said land, someone was burried at some time, so in order to leave the hypathetical spirits of the hypathetical people burried here at peace the land must not be touched for any purpose."

Everything about this deal makes sense for them. But I can see why some "older folks" may vote against it.
Especially if they maximize thier casino with road access requirements.

Hell, if a casino can go on the land, what's the harm in a freeway if you're going to get rich?
I'm only half-kidding.

Hopefully when this approved and construction starts they dont find some ancient Teepee rings or other Native american historical artifacts as it could make the construction take a lot longer then planned.

If they vote it down, then block the access to the casino. If they wont let us build a road, then there is no reason to let them profit from our existing roads.

Is it the Grey Eagle casino we're talking about off Glenmore? I was under the impression that the casino was built as part of this ring-road deal... i.e. Tsuu Tina gets to build a casino and the City/Province gets to build the ring-road. But maybe that's not right? It doesn't make sense if they were allowed to build and now operate the "ring-road" casino but still have the opportunity to vote down the actual ring road...
In any case, I agree with your point.

Damn right. They used my money to build their bloody casino, and I still can't drive through 'their' land. F that.

That's what I thought too. I figured the SW leg of the ring-road was a done-deal since they put up that casino.

Burial land sure, there has to be respect paid.
That said, the DND had that land for 100 years before it got returned and used part of it as a firing range. Point being, much of the sacred area already has been trampled all over already.
Also, for all the "return land to a sacred state" talk, the band wanted all the buildings retained when the DND left, the DND levelled them all (as per the original treaty) other then the crappy housing they let the scum of the band squat in for 3 years.
I realize the price back then were probably some Hudsons Bay blankets from the white man to get that land, and the Band should receive adequate compensation for the use of the land, and not get duped this time around, but they've been dragging their feet for 4+ years on that, looking to squeeze some more dimes out of the levels of government, hoping the public pressure forces the governments to cave.
Living in an adjacent community, I full support the immediate shut down of Calgary tax payer funded roads that allow access and shutting off the city's power grid to the Casino too if this falls through.

If they vote against, it's probably to squeeze more money out of the government.
On another note... I wonder if we'll see "watch for pedestrians" signs all along that part of the highway

Hey,
I see I'm not the only person who has noticed that "Watch for Pedestrians" signs are usually only up in very specific stretches of highway.

You mean right at the borders of the Morley reserve on HWY 1? Those were specifically requested by the reserve to be put up after a few inquiries into pedestrian deaths on the road as opposed to being put up pro-actively by the province. My guess is that you won't see them on the new Stoney Trail when it is finally built (You never know it could be finished right when flying cars seem to take over as a means of transportation).

I don't get why we have to respect them when they don't even respect themselves.

I intentionally posted it like that waiting for this exact response. I can't believe it came so quickly. I grew up in Regina, you'll have to excuse my hatred for natives. I'm sure there are some decent natives around, I've just never seen or met any of them.
Now your post should go "but it is all the white man's fault they are like that, it is systematic and not their fault, we need to try and help them not make things worse".
