Did You Own A Walkman?

Mine was a state of the art Toshiba model from 1989 that my grandpa gave me. Imported from Japan.

I lost the battery cover a long time ago. I wish I could get a replacement. Coolest piece of technology I ever had - and the first as well.

For a period in highschool (yes highschool), I actually switched back to walk-man, but this was only 1998. Burners were $1000, Discman's skipped and you couldn't make your own tracks, etc. I loved the trick of holding down fast-forward just slightly enough to increase the tempo of all the songs. Also gave me AM/FM radio. Soon switched to Minidisc though. The Mp3 player thing got me for awhile but I realize now...I really don't want to have two things stuck in my ears all the time everywhere I go.

I hate how OCD I get about putting music on Mp3 players, spending hours getting all the songs I want and trying to navigate, etc. It's a mess and there are not many songs that I can listen to without getting sick of them (and thus ruining them forever). I only want new songs. I wish there was some kind of mp3 player that could just pick up internet radio or something and still be portable. I want to hear new music only and in only the genres I want.

I had about 3 of them in my lifetime. They never lasted very long as i kept dropping and breaking them.

It seemed like EVERYONE had one of these when I was in elementary/junior high, and I remember being in love with my watch when I finally got it. The ability to press a button and see everything in that blue, indiglo light was just the coolest thing I had ever seen at the time.

I did the same thing--drop thm and break them. I probably had 30 of em though. Now I use a discman imitation to listen to language CDs and Great Courses at work. I still like the sound quality of the Cd better than the iPod but I use my iPhone for tunes too. Anyone ever have a Swatch watch?

Yep. Got it for my birthday when I was 9 years old or so. Then, one day, I left it on the coffee table, and our new-ish rottweiler puppy chewed it up. EXACT watch I had though. Also had 2 walkmans and one discman over-time. Waterproof walkman, and 10 second anti-skip on the discman. It was grand.

I still have my yellow walkman sport. I also have my discman still. I read that article this morning and immediately made a note to find my mix tapes.

I bought my first one in Marlborough in Feb of 88...and went through at least 3 a year till 1994.

I sure did own a walkman, and listened to it well into the Discman age as I was late joining the discman game. I still have lots of memories wandering around Calgary listening to my mixtapes and tapes copied from CDs signed out from the library on my walkman, of the likes of Pavement, Beck, Helmet, Kings X etc, and also my older brother's classic rock tapes like Nazareth, Steve Miller Band, Heart, etc. Those were the days.

i did the same thing..the first day i got my walkman I walked around Forest Lawn for 5 or 6 hours listening to my mixed 80's tape, those were great days.

I honestly don't know how I did it. Could you imagine making plans at like 3pm and meeting someone at the theatre at 8pm and not talking in between. They'd just be expected to show up at the right time and place. Now my plans aren't concrete until I'm actually on my way, and even then it is debatable.

I still don't have a cellphone. I've owned one just to give to my kids so they could use it to phone me in an emergency but otherwise never wanted one. Really because of one trip to the golf course years ago. When the cellphone was this huge clunker a buddy of mine was actually answering the thing during a round of golf. To this day I can't think of a reason other than an emergency why I would ever want to answer a phone while golfing. Or for anything else for that matter. I very much like that people can't get ahold of me. I don't want them to and that didn't start when I was older. I'll meet you at the course at 10am. Hey if they show they show and if not I play anyways. Ditto the movies, restaurants or anything else. I don't need or want any set plans nor do I need to know they have just rolled up in the parking lot. I'd rather just wing it and go with the flow. To me they are like an annoyance hung around your neck and a security blanket.

Email I've found to be a fabulous new technology but the cellphone--nope. I'll bet 90% of the non-work conversations are meaningless blather. NO thanks but I don't need to get a call as I'm staring at a ten footer for birdie to remind me to pick up milk on the way home, or to remind me I'd suppose to drive them to their friends later, or any other hogwash. Spare me!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a phone grouch too, Johnny. Finally got one when my wife was pregnant. Don't really use it now, don't really care to.

no need to 'charge' the glow in the dark nipples that were nearly impossible to see in the dark. and, the stupid 'light' on digital watched back then only lit one side of the screen.

yeah, indiglo was the future. i had an analog version.

I still have an indiglo Timex watch that I wear when I run. I think the strap is the same one in the picture, but a darker blue...

When my wife was pregnant I just rented one of those beeper things. I know every dang one of my relatives/friends/workmates etc. over 13 and up into their 80's has one of the dang things but I'm not joining the horde.

(I don't suppose you noticed that big Timex logo on the watch did you? That's like calling a car a Kia Integra instead of Accura.)

I still use that style of watch. Easy to see at a glance, indiglo as mentioned allows you to see the entire watch, and inexpensive enough that if I happen to do something to break it- it's not a big deal.

Oh thank god I thought I was the last person in North America without a cell phone.
I dont want to become one of those ######s who go to hang out with their friends only to ignore them and text all their other friends that aren't there. I also like the independance of not having a cell phone.

My pals who have cell phones are constantly being checked upon by their girlfriends/wives and it is so annoying.

Remember video cameras? My dad, ever the guy that always had to buy the coolest, latest gadget, brought one home when I was about 12. It was one of those big f'rs that came in a big fat briefcase. I was always assigned the task of figuring out how to use his new toys and teaching him so that he didn't have to read the manual. I remember playing with that thing for awhile.

And cell phones. I still clearly remember my dad calling me one day at my mom's house and telling me he was going to pick me up in 5 minutes. He told me he was talking on a mini telephone that fit in his shirt pocket. I remember imagining an actual desk type telephone with a fat base and a cord and an earpiece and microphone - just minature. When I saw that brick, I was just amazed.

Hahahaha, I can't stop laughing. I had the same experience. My dad called home one day and he wanted my mom to get the whole family on the phone cause he had something he had to share. We all got on different phones in the house as he told us he's making this call in his car while driving home. The same way you did 4x4, I imagined a regular phone just smaller. I was so exited, so exited to see this crazy new invention. The biggest difference is that it was exactly how I imagined it but actually a bit bigger. It came in a small looking briefcase, that had a plug that plugged in to the lighter jack.

Kind of like this, but bigger and the buttons where on the base, and it came in a case.
