I never understood Dolby. I'd much rather have a bit of a hissing noise than the sound of muffled music.

Me too! Except mine was a knock off. I didn't have the heart to toss in until last year.

If that kid wrote that article himself I'm pretty impressed.

Yes, I did.

Then I owned a Diskman. I might still have both of them (diskman, for sure. Walkman - I don't know).

I use to rock the bright yellow Sony in the early 90's.....moved on to the discman in high school, had the Panasonic Shockwave that used to be shiznit. Have never moved onto an Ipod, just don't really listen to a lot of music anymore. I have a few songs on my mp3 player on my phone, but i rarely use that.

"So it's not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing choice of music player. If I was browsing in a shop maybe I would have chosen something else.
From a practical point of view, the Walkman is rather cumbersome."

This is coming from a 13 year old? Wow.

I loved my yellow sports Walkman. KISS tapes during the day and CHQR 810 for Flames broadcasts in the evening.

I had a Walkman in elementary school. A Discman in junior high. A Mini Disc player in senior high. And now I have an iPod and a few generic MP3 players.

How times have changed.

Oh man... I remember the days of taking transit everywhere, with my trusty bus pass and my big yellow walkman. Then, for xmas in ~1994, my mom bought me a discman. It was a high school kid's dream come true.

Kids these days (grumble) have no idea what it was like to have to carry around tapes and CDs in their backpacks. Actually have to go to a library to do research for reports. No such thing as email, facebook. Maybe one or two kids in the group had internet at home and we'd all crowd around their 386 (my first computer was a 286) and go online via AOL.
Hell, if you wanted to meet up with a friend, you had to call his or her house and likely deal with one of the parents before getting through to your friend. And if you were out, you'd have to use an icky pay phone.

I can't believe the advancement in technology I've witnessed in my 30 years.

A clear sign I'm living in the future:

Technology from the past indeed. Ouch.

I had a Sony Discman for something like 5 years.

It was awesome while it lasted.

Remember the original discmans that would skip if you touched them. Then they came out with anti-skip that let you ride in a car without it skipping.

now i can have an ipod that holds hundreds of CDs..... an I can run with it.

Man I hope I don't ever have to back.

I had the blue sports walkman over 20 years ago. The volume knob broke off at full volume. My hearing has never recovered.

Funny, just the other day I was using my circa 2003 Discman- it actually plays MP3s too. Sure enough somebody commented about how ancient it was.

I still use it for car trips, and for this case I was testing out some noise cancelling headphones. (My cell phone is my MP3 player, and the jack is different.)
