Default Petro-investors prefer Manitoba over Alberta, Saskatchewan: survey

Quote:
Manitoba has overtaken Saskatchewan and Alberta as the most attractive province for oil and gas investment, according to a global survey of petroleum executives and managers released Wednesday by the Fraser Institute research group.
Quote:
"The survey results clearly show the industry's dissatisfaction with the Alberta government's misguided policies. Punitive royalty rates, a lack of consultation, and a growing anti-energy bias are common complaints about (Premier Ed Stelmach's) government," said Gerry Angevine, Fraser Institute senior economist and co-ordinator of the annual survey, now in its third year.

"Meanwhile, Manitoba has quietly encouraged oil and gas investment with low royalties and an easy to understand regulatory framework," Angevine said.

Top-notch job by the morons in charge.

When I think of Stelmach running this province, I picture a guy who checks his 649 ticket one night and discovers he's won the jackpot... but then 10 minutes later, while watching an infomercial for a food processor, completely destroys his ticket by writing the toll-free number on it with a big black permanent marker.

funny thing is had it been one of the other two parties in charge the royalties would of been even higher..so its not like it would of made a difference..industry would be just whining about them instead..

Good ole unsteady Eddy.

Its a comical farce that he is the premier of this province. One of our VPs went to soem sort of dinner function with Eddy and Brad Whal? From Sask. He said comparing the two was like comparing a ###### to Regan.

Perhaps, but if rural Albertans had removed their heads from their butts and elected Jim Dinning, we wouldn't even be talking about this.

Hmmm, who to trust with our wealth of resources...a pig farmer or the former treasurer of the province. *slow clap*

I just watched an Oliver Stone interview the other day, he said these two things weren't that far apart (his justification for not making a "Regan" movie despite JFK, Nixon, W.). Obviously that's not the consensus view

I can't wait for another party to take this place over... though, who can we really blame, the people we vote for, or the voters themselves (us). Maybe if we had a bit more political awareness we'd have better representation.

The Wild Rose Alliance in power would absolutely scare the holy hell out of me. Unless it's the Liberals, the PC's are the lesser of two evils.

Right now, as much as it pains me, I'd vote Liberal. The Wild Rose Alliance has too many of the wrong people and unpalatable social policies, despite appearing clearly superior economically speaking.

However my big worry is that the Liberals seem about as economically ######ed as the PCs are. At least Dr. Swann knows that healthcare efficiency doesn't mean cutting beds and jobs. The big plus in voting Liberal is that it might force Special Ed and his band of Rural-minded hicks out, and some intelligent PCs in.

This survey is a little suspect. If there are companies looking for gas in Manitoba, I have some beautiful land they may want to invest in, in central Florida.

I doubt the PCs will get knocked out completely, but more Liberal or some WildRose seats will make them rethink their policies.

As bad as the PC's have been, the Liberals and NDP would have made it even worse - they wanted even higher royalties!

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives right now. The Liberal leader is a NDP in red clothing. The Wild Rose party is virtually non-existant with no current leader. The NDP is the NDP and would destroy the province even more than the PC's have right now.

We're hooped.

I agree, Manitoba would be nowhere close to the most desirable destination for oil and gas investment if it had an NDP government. They would be in a disastrous state if that were to be the case.

Funny how I wasn't even talking about Manitoba. Thanks though.

The NDP parties may share the same name, but their philosophies and workings are very different. Same goes for the Liberals, Conservatives, etc. It varies province to province.

BUT... you already knew that...

Here's an interesting article that describes the problems with the previous royalty structure as well as the current royalty system.

I got this in an email today, skimmed the Fraser report. Pretty much says what everyone knows already in downtown Calgary but that's okay. We all know that the province's power and wealth stems from the oil and gas resources it harvests, and we all know there's a cyclical lag between what goes on downtown, out to the field, into the economy, and trickles down to everyone. Alberta was cookin', was a decent place to invest, then people (governments) get greedy, want more, they change stuff and ruin it, forcing companies and businesses elsewhere, only to change it back in a few years.

Alberta will be back sometime, let's just hope our rusted infrastructure holds up.

Oh no wait... it isn't a renewable resource. And we've drained the hell out of the province? Oh well, there's always........... farming... I guess. Biting the hand that feeds you. Do we need more hospitals? More roads? More schools? Less debt? More anything? Stelmach shrunk the size of the pie, he didn't cut into a bigger piece.

This isn't industry whining, this is called business, which means follow the money. Otherwise, you don't get these people called investors, and you go out of business. Meanwhile, if prices remain this despicable on natural gas, we'll see the layoff train another lap or two. But Ed's cool, I guess.

I voted Liberal last time for this very reason. Unfortunately, I had to hold my nose while doing it, as Dave Taylor is my MLA. I couldn't stand the guy when he was a talk show host on QR, and I can't stand him now. But the PCs need a message sent to them. Bad.

Well, the Liberal candidate in my riding is decent enough, but I'm still waiting to see what the WildRose Party does.

Their economic platform is better, and in the general scheme of things, they won't do THAT much socially.

So all those crazies everyone is worried about? Yeah, they won't change much.

Oh, you really must expand on this. Please explain what is so scary about the WAP?

Fiscally there is zero difference between the PC's and Liberals. Socially the PC's are swinging so far right .... well it seems to me that to a young fellow like you that would be far scarier than a libertarian leaning WAP.
