It's all about the delivery. When I say thanks I don't have to think about it, it is a totally natural reaction. When some people say cheers you can tell they wanted to say thanks and had to think about how cool they will look if they say cheers instead and it makes me want to punch them in the throat.

I work at a very international company (mostly French) and I've noticed a lot of "kind regards" sign-offs, which have now been shortened to just KR, <name>. Now that bugs me. It's bad enough that I have to wade through a bunch of idiotic business acronyms in the body of your e-mail, but then you have to sign off with one?

I don't understand why people sign their emails at all. My name is in the FROM header, so it's not like the recipient doesn't know where it came from, so what is the point of a signature?

If I *was* going to use a signature, it'd go rather like:

By using "Cheers" in place of "Thanks" I still got the thanks message across, and the person receiving it knows that I was making a positive comment.

Another example; as an IT Support person:

"I have restored all of the folders that you deleted.

Cheers
Ken"

In that case, they are not getting a "thanks" from me- they caused me some extra work. But I'm not upset. So "Cheers" is also an appropriate salutation.

I never greet in an email. Straight to the point. No hello, no name acknowledgement, nothing. Body of the email, and always signed with my initials. Anyone that's ever recieved more than that should feel special because I give no exception to anyone. I don't care if you're the lawyer for my murder trial or the hottest women I've ever met. No hello, no thanks. Body of email, initials.

I don't get the initials sign off. Are you too lazy to type your name? Is that what you prefer to be called?

Never really thought about it that way. I'm certainly not too lazy to type my name. And no, I don't prefer to be called emm bee. It's just what I do with email. I'm original, mofo!

I was in Nara, Japan and talking to a Spanish guy in a hostel, and when we said our goodbyes I said "Cheers" and he turns around and gives a laugh and says "Cheers. What a Canadian thing to say."

Personally I like using the term 'cheers'. I almost always sign off my e-mails with it, and do incorporate it into my everyday usage. I don't go around saying 'g'day mate' and 'I'll have another ale, cheers', but I do think it puts an additional spin on something that is all too commonly said in passing.

Saying thanks in our society, a door is help open for you, you're handed your purchase at the store, someone stops for you in a sidewalk. It seems we say "thanks" as an acknowledgement of someone doing something for you that they were supposed to, or expected to do. If it's something very meaningful a look in the eye and saying "thank you" tends to be a bit more powerful. But what if it was something small, yet unexpected? A simple 'thanks' can go unnoticed but you want to show that you really did notice what was done, I find 'cheers' works well.

In addition after having a good conversation with someone saying 'cheers' as a goodbye also has the same effect. It's common enough that it isn't out of place, yet uncommon enough to take notice.

In short, I use 'cheers' and will continue to use the term.

Ha. I also use "Regards" as the socially acceptable "F-U". I'm pretty consistent with my "Thanks" usage in a formal setting. For friends, etc. I usually say "talk to you later/soon" or something to that effect.
