Finally saw it and I loved it, I actually was crying at one point it was so funny.
I think peoples taste among the top comedy's has sooo much to do with the theme relative to their own experiences.
If you had a bunch of crazy roommates in college maybe Old School really speaks to you and you recall all of your own antics? Maybe you just broke-up with your serious girlfriend 4months before watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall and it really speaks to you (as happened with myself), or maybe you have been to Vegas a bunch of times with all of your best guy friends and have those hard to remember surreal moments of your own to add to the comedy of the actual movie (again, as I know I can relate to).
I imagine if you hate Vegas, it is not your scene, etc, then The Hangover is not going to be as funny to you.
If you have never really invested yourself in a relationship only to see that girl run off with someone else you might not relate to a lot of the 'truth' behind Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc.
But I don't know how anyone who has partied hard in Vegas could not love this movie!

I finally saw it tonight, but I was expecting so much from all the hype. Everyone was telling me I had to go see it since I am going to Vegas for my stag in a couple months.
I still liked it and found it funny, but I wish I seen this on opening night so I didn't have that high of expectations

I had putting seeing this movie off for a long time but last night, I went to a screening of Public Enemies, but the line was just plain stupid, so my brother and I decided to see the Hangover instead. It was as advertised. I thought it was hysterical. I'm not a huge fan of drunk or stoner humor, but I really liked this flick. The characters had great chemistry and worked really well off each other.
The end credits was priceless, seeing the guys doing rails with Carrot Top just put me over the edge. Also the dude getting the hummer in the elevator.....awesome.
If we're comparing the Hangover with all the recent comedies of the same kind of ilk, I would put the Hangover as number 2. These are my fav comedies of lets say the LAST 5 YEARS.
40 Year Old Virgin
The Hangover
Clerks 2
Knocked Up
Superbad
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Dodgeball.....not great, had its moments, really shouldn't be on the list.
I loathed Old School, Starsky and Hutch, and wasn't really fond of Forgetting Sarah Marshall.....FSM had its moments, Russel Brand was hilarious, but I felt it was a tad long and took too long to get to the funny bits.......but the worst comedy of the last few years has to be Pineapple Express. I thought it was brutal. I get high once in awhile, so I get the humor, but I really didn't find it funny and I found myself wanting to turn it off during the last hour. Not funny and I'm a huge Seth Rogen fan.
Watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall a couple more times. I'd say it took me three times to really start appreciating it.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Office Space
Superbad
The Big Lebowski
Knocked Up
Are my top five.
I've seen FSM three times now, and it just doesn't do it for me. There are some very funny parts and the "Inside You" song is freaking hilarious, but overall, I didn't think it was all that great. You added some older comedies in there, my list was kind of the last few years of the R Rated comedies.....the Apatow/Ferrel/Rogen style of comedy.
Oh, I forgot Wedding Crashers and I Love You Man, add that to my list of ones that I liked.

Die, Die, Diiie. I can't.

I absolutely agree. I'm not sure what that says about me seeing as "the 40 year old virgin" is my favorite comedy, but you're absolutely right.

I know Bad Santa is actually 6 years old but it is easily the best comedy in the last 10 years. No contest. Better than Super Troupers, Half Baked, Big Lebowski.
Only Clerks, South Park, and Beavis and Butthead were better in the last 15 or so years, with Clerks being the only live action of the three. (Personally I'd include Mallrats but not a lot of people like that movie)
If I forgot any classics in the last 15 years remind me, but those ones are at the top for me. Honorable mentions go to Office Space (which was more clever than funny IMO) Borat and maybe Dazed and Confused. Oh and maybe Bullworth and Tommy Boy.
I really like Todd Phillips so I was pretty hyped for this one. I thought The Hangover was good, but not great. I liked it, but didn't love it. Maybe my expectations were too high though... As a reference point, for me it's not quite as funny as Old School.
All that said, I thought Ken Jeong (Mr. Chow) was worth the price of admission. Absolutely hilarious. Dr. Ken steals it in everything he does and was so funny in this. Everyone seems to think Galifianakis is the break-out star... I thought he was merely ok. Jeong is the guy to watch imo...
For example, Dr. Ken had a scene in 'Knocked Up' which was the funniest moment of the film for me (I think this is a deleted scene):
He's in EVERY single movie coming out this year and is quickly becoming the most popular secondary character actor out there. His list of past work is like a list of my favorite TV shows and movies of the past couple of years.
I don't really understand why everyone thinks Forgetting Sarah Marshall is so funny. Russell Brand is pretty funny and there are a couple of funny lines, but otherwise the only thing that kept me watching was Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis.

Almost every thing Russell Brand said in that movie had me laughing to the point of tears. I don't know what it is but I've always found funny people with accents to be hysterical.
Watched this movie on Friday night and it is the best movie I've ever seen, puts Superbad, Old School etc. to shame. Laughs throughout.
Nothing puts Old School to shame. Superbad should have been called Superoverrated. FSM sucked, and The Hangover is not the greatest comedy, it is good though.
I still think the best part is the ending with all the photos.
