They already have everything, why give a gift?

If it was longer away I have found that putting there picture on a few cases of jones cola was a great gift.

I have done that a few times for different things g/f parents anniversary, my parents anniversary, my sisters graduation.

You have to start the process about 2 months ahead of time but its a fantastic gift, and the bonus is that the jones cola actually tastes good Its also not that expensive, although those who dont know think it costs you a fortune

I don't know about this one. For my parent's 30th anniversary my sister and I gave them $500 worth of a family photo shoot. But it's kind of a different situation since we're their kids.

50th is big, but it's hard to imagine what they might want--presumably there isn't any pressing need for more "stuff."

What about getting them a weekend away somewhere really nice? You could split the cost with another family member and it wouldn't be too bad.

I don't know how they are doing health wise but you or someone in the family could organize a trip for them.... send them to Pheonix or on a cruise or AI in Mexico... if you have a big family you can split the cost so it shouldn't be too expensive.

By this time in their life they've probably got enough stuff.

Alternatively, we used to get our grandparents gc to their local restaurants and taxi vouchers etc.

Plant a tree in their name. Create 2 plaques - one for them and a one for the tree.

Oh and a certificate of authenticity... People love that.

A medal.

Edit: But seriously, when my grandparents had their 50th anniversary, I sent a letter to the Prime Minister's office requesting a congratulatory and signed letter.

They really liked it.

They do it all the time. You can get one from Stelmach too (if you want....)

Off-topic but, you also get a letter from the Queen if you live to be 100. My great-grandma got one!!

If you are requesting congratulatory letters you need to do that a couple months in advance usually.

According to the Lieutenant Governor's website you can request letters from the following:
Birthdays (5 year intervals)
100+: Queen
90+: Governor General
80+: Lieutenant Governor
75+: Prime Minister, Premier
65+: MP, MLA

Anniversaries (5 year intervals)
60+: Queen
50+: Governor General, Lieutenant Governor
25+: Prime Minister, Premier, MP, MLA

Just kidding. I think I've got maybe 5 friends whose parents are still married. I must live in some weird bubble of society where everyone I know is the product of a divorce, or is divorced, or is getting divorced, or never got married, or was born in an unmarried situation.
