There really isn't a clubbing scene, I agree. Calgary is definitely much more a "pub" town. Lots and lots of good pub options. But basically no club options for those over the age of 19-20.
I for one am very happy about the calgary pub scene and lack of a club scene. As a big white dude with 2 left feet clubs suck ass.

Ceili's, Cowboys, Tantra, Coyotes (now gone), Chicago Chophouse (I think??), Zen 8 (I think??)... I think there's probably more.
I believe Vicker's has sold Ceili's to one of his partners, had this from a pretty good source. They also said that once Cowboys is forced to leave its current location (due to the 4th street underpass going ahead by year end) that they have no where else to go. It appears that Vicker's is all out of friends to help him find a new home for Cowboys.
Personally I just can't see them let the Cowboys brand die, they'll come up with something.
One place that actually seems to get the balance alright is the King's Head. I used to really like the Rusty Cage in the south too, but they burned us on a birthday reservation once, so we haven't been there in a while.
Let's form a CP group to go and check out Cowboys. Too many people haven't gone, and I think we could really pull off an awesome buzz kill for all the tramps and guidos there!
That would be so lame is swings back into awesome territory.

You mean, 'M' doesn't do it for you?
I used to actually like the Mynt... minus the racist bouncers, of course. I always had a good time there, and the roof was really fun to party on during the summer.
Best club I've ever been to was probably the The Metro in Auckland, which was just a HUGE old bank downtown (kinda like the downtown A+B Sound in Calgary)... and people were dancing on the counters and everything, and there were hundreds... and hundreds... of good looking women. Ridiculous!
Here's an interesting question to you people, then... what was better overall - the Taz or Cowboys?
To me they both sit somewhere between foot fungus / green toejam and the pasty crud that forms at the side of your mouth. Does anybody disagree?

I liked it when it was The Embassy, I think that is what it was called at least.
I heard even in hollywood, some of the most popular bars for celebs are crappy hole-in-the-wall type places. I went to Cowboys a few times (non-stampede time), it was alright, but it wasn't like there was anything there that would make it memorable and making a trip and finding parking downtown was a bit of a pain, so I wasn't a fan of Cowboys. I always just ended up going to Killkenny's when I went out with friends.
"Posh bars" are overrated IMO. I've been to a few in California and they're nothing exciting.

Agree - I've been to a few as well, and the main draw seems to be exclusivity, as if you've somehow proved something by getting into a freakin' bar and paying twice as much for a drink as you would somewhere else. As far as I'm concerned, people that enjoy those bars "prove" something else - that they mistake money for class.

I think that is where Cowboys is different. They are that hole in the ground place but want to be the posh nightclub.
Places like CBGBs is one that just comes to mind, although not a club per se. Great little hole in the wall dump of a club but popular for the right reasons. No one at CBGBs ever got denied because they weren't "cool" enough to get in. Cowboys tends to be incredibly pretentious in their attitude IMO. They need to be more accepting of their ghetto side. They aren't a 5 star nightclub.
I'm totally going to remove one of my thanks from earlier today (I'm out) so that I can thank this post, I find it that hilarious. (in a I'm not gay but I find your gayness funny, in a totally respectful way kind of funny. seriously I'm laughing with you not at you)

I have the sudden urge to go to Cowboys and get drunk and drag off. Hmph. I've never been, but I assume there will be a hot yet douchy 19 year old I could do that with.
Well, maybe that's a stretch. 22 might be my lower limit now. But when you're that drunk, who cares, right?
