I don't get wrapped up in celebrity lives, or gossip, or really feel any emotion when a celebrity dies. When I heard that Michael Jackson passed, it was a shock and I did for once feel something.
I work in the music business, Michael is a legend who's popularity transcends one genre of music. Thriller may have saved the record industry. There was never a bigger album, there will never be another album as large as that one. Shortly after the news broke, the country music station up here played 'man in the mirror'. Everything the guy did was the best...his songwriting, his singing and of course his dancing. No one influenced pop culture as much as Michael Jackson did.
I fully recognize how weird Michael was. I think alot of that had to do with his upbringing...he never got to have a childhood. What childhood he did have, he was abused. It's a sad story. I hope that when people remember the guy, they remember how great that music is. How amazing those music videos are and how to do the Thriller. He had his faults, they are well documented but he will forever be one of, if not the greatest musician we've seen.

Because most pop stars are constantly dodging child molestation accusations. How many pedo trials has Bono, Sting, or Eddie Van Halen been in? Hmmm? Maybe it's because they don't invite the god damn Cub Scouts over for sleep-overs?
Michael Jackson has been a show business pariah well over a decade now for good reason.
It's reported he was in debt to the tune of $400 million as well, so his lavish lifestyle impacts his children as well. He was a lousy parent and a lousy human being.

Pop music is the most watered down, cliche, tacky a thoughtless music out there. Michael Jackson and most popstars, make their living by entertaining... but the music is really just a small part of it. They sell their music with gimmicks (ie. image, sex, lifesyle, beauty, flashy shows) . Any "true" music fan doesn't need that crap and would actually be turned off by it. Just my opinion of course.

I think you have a narrow definition of what pop music is. Pop music isnt neccessarily just the genre that we see today full of lip syncing pop tarts. There's some legitimacy to the art of creating pop music. I agree with you if you are talking about pop music today, but in my mind there is no question the pop music Michael Jackson created from when he was a small child to before he turned white, was simply put, fantastic music. Pop music in itself isn't a bad thing, the Beatles were pop when they started, Elvis was pop, heck even Nirvana was pop. Michael Jackson's music is amongst the best and most impactful music ever created.

Just because your opinion has me curious, what "true music" do you like ?
Michael Jackson bridged the gap between classic Motown to the R & B of today. You don't have to like it, but I think it has to be respected in terms of its influence and resonation.
The man could flat out sing too.

He didn't just bridge the gap betweem music styles. He create entire genres and bridged the color barrier as well. I'm sorry but the King of Pop has had more impact in the world than the King of Rock.
As far as singers/musicians I miss the most though, Michael Jackson doesn't even crack my top 5. Top of the list is probably either Freddie Mercury or Jimmy Hendrix.
