Default Job Hunting is sooooo frustrating right now!

I hate this economy recession!!! When is it going to improve? I cant find a job for the life of me! I visit these sites several times daily, and to be honest the number of jobs on them have declined progressively throughout the year. Not only that, but it seems half of them are scams. Im sick and tired of seeing nothing but phoney jobs on all these sites, argh.

- workopolis
- monster
- govt of canada job bank
- job shark
- craigslist
- kijiji

Yes thats right, quite a lot of jobs are posting on craigslist and Kijiji cause its FREE! Does anyone know any other sites or ways to find jobs in the city? Workopolis and monster have been dissapointing me this year - it seems to be high end jobs for execs or people with 505 year master degrees and Ive been keeping track of the job postings on there and it blows right now! Heck, you cant even look in the Sun or Herald anymore to find legit jobs.

ANd Im sick of wasting my time going to these interviews, where the person after will literally gaurentee getting back to me and dont. So classless and unprofessional, people who think this is the way to run HR are out to lunch and can kiss my ***!

Is anyone else in my shoes? I know a few others and its so discouraging right now, I feel like crying.

Try www.eluta.ca - it seems to have a lot of jobs posted...

and all I can say is keep trying, my brother-in-law just got a job today after applying for umpteen jobs and getting rejected umpteen-1 times

The other thing you might want to do is to look at company websites, as many are trying to save money...

good luck!

I'm in the same boat. And all I want is part-time job until the end of August so I can move back to Calgary once my schooling is done. I can't find a thing...I even applied to be a dishwasher for crying out loud and not even a single call back. It is really frustrating nowadays it seems. I've tried all the usual online suspects as well as walking in and asking to speak with someone. It's been almost a month and I've had 1 interview at a video store and they never called back. Sheesh, maybe I should get into the drug trade.

I'm with you MissKat. I've been out of work since January and there isn't anything right now. Right now I'd be ecstatic just to find some part time under the table work for the summer.

EI taking months to kick in didn't help much either. Thank god I had saved up a few months expenses.

I feel your pain! But mostly due to the fact that I've applied for more jobs in the last 3 months than I had in the previous 12 years.

Working.com is absolutely horrible. It's the same 10 companies every single day. Even when you select "Last 24 hrs". Have you tried www.calgaryjobshop.ca? I guess it depends on the type of work you are looking for, but I like it. And there is www.hcareers.ca for hospitality jobs (ie restaurants, hotels, etc).

Try sending resumes out to companies you'd like to work for. Outline in your cover letter areas of the company that you think you can be an assett. I hear a lot of job openings never get posted.

very true. I don't know what MK does for a career, but I know in my there are a few companies in my field that just don't post positions - you send in your resume and if they like you, they find a position for you.

I know for me, its tough being in an industry that is driven by consumer spending, but I was one of a very few that even got interviews and the interviews I got were for positions that weren't created yet (and in the end, they didn't end up creating the position due to budget reasons)

I've been looking for 2 months now. Going after other provinces now as I'm not tied down here and can move at any time. Still not producing very many results though. There's just nothing much available in my field at the moment.
And now today I hear from the goverment about EI and that my previous employer is saying one thing while I'm saying a different thing, so fun times. (They said I quit, but I was actually terminated with severance... um... ya... ok).

My career? What career? Ive never had one, and never will. Ive given up on my career goals YEARS ago. I will be working dead end temp jobs for the rest of my life - no jokes.

What field are you in?

To be honest, sites like Workopolis are the last resort. I'd go right to the comapany websites and see if they have employment listings. If you use Workopolis and other sites like that, you are competing with everyone else using that site. There are numerous jobs out there that are not advertised. For example, the company I work for rarely ever advertises. We have a steady stream of applicants all the time.. and it just comes down to applying at the right time.

Your best bet is to either look at company specific websites or just go and talk to people in person. You might also want to check provincial and municipal websites as they quite often have their own job banks. University websites and bulletin boards are another place to look. If you are looking in a specific field, you might also just do a google search for; "Jobs in ___________". There are often people or groups that consolidate job posting from various sources for people job hunting.

My basement needs cleaning and yard needs work. I pay bare minimum, but serve ice-cold iced tea.

Im in accouting field, but its not what I want to do. Its just a dead end job that ive been working at. My contract is up July 1st (day of NHL free agency woot!) and ive been looking for a new job for the past 3-4 months!

Honestly, right now cause I know my career is shot and wont ever happen with me, when I look for work...Im open to just about anything. When I do see jobs posted for work in my "dream field...that I will never work in", I just ignore it and chuckle in disgust. I dont even bother trying to apply for jobs in my "dream field" cause it will never happen and just be a waste of time. Thats why I apply to just about anything now.

Are you wearing a short enough skirt?

This is why you don't look for another job! I just recently quit my job because I didn't like it and for now I am just going to play golf every day until Sept/Oct when people start going back to school.

If I had enough money to do that, I'd be right there with ya.

Oh crap, money! I knew there was something wrong with my plan.

Luckily for me I always put away money every paycheck and now it is paying off. It sucks living on your savings but really it's just money, I will make lots later and this summer is going to be ridiculous! There is nothing better than waking up at noon, go play 18, nap, hit the gym, nap, drink, pass out and repeat.
