Default #@&!#ing Magpies!

For the last week we have had 4 Magpies take over our back yard. These things are getting increasingly braver, They beleive my yard is their territory and they have begun terrorizing my kids. All this plus the incredible noise they make and my patio and lawn furniture are getting covered in crap!

Any creative suggestion on how to get rid of these flying RATS! would be greatly appreciated.

...Or should I go buy a BB Gun?

Cats are good; preferably cougar or bobcat.

I just had to let a bird, not Magpie but Sparrow, out of my house. This is the second time i've had a bird in my house this year. Older style house with storm type windows, no screens, but no direct flight in either. Watching them trying to fly through a window is confirmation that they super stupid.
For getting rid of Magpies... listed are some humane ways that might work.

they dive bomb my dog when doing her business in the yard, they come to the front step and 'caw' at my dog when she's standing inside at the front door and most recently, they have completely obliterated my beans i'm growing in the back yard. saw them this morning trying to figure out how to kill my tomatoes too.

Just be sure that you stop with the magpies when you break out the bb gun. If you go beyond the species your grandma might beat your ass with a willow switch.

Are these also called Mockingbirds? I've heard some people refer to them as such, but a quick search on Google images says they are not.

That's another concern I have too. I'm growing beans,Peas, corn, tomatoes, strawberries, sweet peas etc.

I've heard they will try to ravage any type of fruit or veggie, even as big as a tomato.

I guess I'll go buy the gun because this problem is multi faceted and it's obviously (judging from the comments here) only going to get worse. Much worse.

Yes, 'twas the strawberries that my grandma contracted me to protect from the magpies. I couldn't control my blood lust and didn't stop once the small group of magpies had been vanquished. I slaughtered untold numbers of other birds (like 10) and my grandma made me go cut my own switch.

Your yard IS their territory, get over it! They have all the right in the world to be there.

You do know it is illegal to shoot the magpies right? Why don't you try hanging a bird feeder at the far end of your property instead on senselessy killing something because it is making your life inconvienent??

I stand corrected, it is not illegal in Canada which is where I assume you are, just in the U.S. Still, they have just as much right to be there as you do, look for other solutions then shooting them.

I don't understand the hatred of Magpies. They're such a beautiful bird.

I feed them all the time.

After they kill your pet bunny, you tend to start hating them.

A water hose with a fine spray right at 'em can dissuade them often, as well.

Ugh, Magpies. I shoot them with my paintball gun, very humane yet amusing way to get rid of them. They are very intellegent birds, so they figure it out after a couple days.
