What a bizzare market, that the top 3 stations are Talk Radio.

I recall when Fuel first hit the air there were a few threads on it and people mentioning that it sounded like something they would like. I signed up on their website and do their listener surveys every couple of months. In the Random thoughts thread yesterday I worried that something was up when there were no morning crew or weather or traffic reports, and the morning DJ blogs were pulled when I looked for them.
This sucks, I supported them since they hit the airwaves.
And while internet radio is fine, my network cable doesn't stretch to my car and the RIAA & CRIA are still trying to force huge licensing costs on internet broadcasters, and that will kill them. My work blocks all streaming media. And I'm not a patient enough music listener to sift through all new music to pull out the good stuff for iPod listening. Satellite is an option, but Sirius is bleeding money and barely survived bankruptcy this spring even after they took over XM.
Fuel was the best station for me, and I am disappointed it will be gone.

Vibe is actually #2. Talk still does very well in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver I believe.
Soon this flawed ratings system will be gone though. PPM's (Portable People Meters) are being introduced in Calgary in the very near future. It will be interesting to see if any of the numbers change. It's a cool concept.

I just did a check for Fuel's Facebook pages. This is directly from it:
Thanks for listening, thanks for being a fan, friend, etc.... FUEL will be off the air and switching over to a new format tomorrow at 6pm. Its going to be different, but we would love to continue a "friendship" with you all.... Again, your support has been very much appreciated. Emma & The FUEL 90.3 Team.
That was posted 46 min ago.
Someone posted on their Facebook group page that they fired all the staff, and are re-naming to "AMP"
This sucks!

Well, it's changing. The RDS in my car says something like "Calgary's newest station debuts 6pm Saturday."

It makes sense, the older population are listening to talk radio and oldies, the younger generation have their itunes and ipods...may not be listening to radio, especially if you don't drive.

I still stand by my source that Jax is safe, and all the office jobs for the most part are safe. The rest of the on air may not have the same fate. I'm thinking JBell, who did traffic, may be safe, cause she was the voice of the "This hour" tags in the commercials...

Here's a question and maybe some of the radio/media people can answer it.
When a radio station changes, why do they always clear house within a two-three days time span? Secondly, how after firing what seems like 50-70% of their staff, are they able to fill the station with new employees? Can't some of these employees be utilized? And are there full teams of Radio Stations employees waiting around in large packs waiting for formats to collapse?

They are already in use. This should be the first book for Edmonton and Calgary stations using numbers totally from the PPM. I know this because I have one hanging from my pants right now.

It's usually just the on air team that gets the axe. Sometimes the PD is gonzo as well. It all depends on their sound. I've never seen a full team make it though a format change.
The writers, sales, producers, etc... they aren't the 'voices' of the station, so they're usually safe.
Radio is a weird beast, that there's a lot of people in it, and a lot of people trying to get into it. Think of all the Medicine Hat's, Lethbridge's, Prince George's, etc that have tallent working on their craft to get into the Calgary's, Edmonton's, Vancouver's, etc...
Most stations that I've experienced a flip, interntally, or as a listener haven't done it on a weekend. Most flips are secret until the day before it happens, and almost never are they advertised to the public before they switch. On Air tallent that isn't retained is usually bought out.
That's just my experience... which isn't more than about 5 over the last 8 years...

I've heard the Fuel morning traffic person (J-Bell) doing a bunch of, "This hour is brought to you by...." spots.
How many morning shows has Frasier been on that have flopped? At least 3 I can recall. She mush have pictures of someone.

Honestly this is the first I've ever heard of this station. Radio is terrible here in Calgary. The only thing that's remotely tolerable is the Fan 960.
