Icon40 Breaking news coming from Pittsburgh....

All that is known is that leading scorer Jason Spezza was seen talking to GM Goffie and seen leaving with a packed bag...Sources close to the Pens are saying that Spezza may be on the move to the Howe conference.

GM Goffie is gone to a cabin in exclusion for the night to prepare for tomorrows draft and should be around about 20-30mins before the first pick.

There will be no available comments from the Pens camp until his return.

I hope this isn't the deal I think it is...at least from the other team's perspective.

If this is the deal I think it is, then good on both teams as it seems like Goffies team can handle the loss of a few solid assets and the other organization could use a mid 20s stud on their roster!

I know what the deal is and I think it's good for both sides. I see the arguement why people don't think it's good for the other side but he is getting 2 good quality assets who can play on line 1 as well as another asset who can play on the 2nd pairing of defense. Pittsburgh does well to get a bonafide prospect for years to come and some depth.

I will have more later but in the end, I had 6 different gms look at the deal and it came back 3-3, I think both Jeff and I agree that it is fairly even, its a matter of will JT or Hedman be as good as Spezza, and in a fantasy league, JT or Hedman are at least 2 maybe 3 years away from having a good rating.

True but why do you need a good rated player right now?

Yeah I think that's the thing for me. Value-wise there's nothing wrong with the deal - but given the Flames current state I think having a JT asset and the cap to go with it would be more helpful than Jason Spezza who is going to need a big fat RFA grid deal.

But I've been wrong before...

I was one of the GM's who didn't get back to you yet on this deal...and I would have made it 4-3 for the Flames.

I would like this deal for the Flames. The goal is to win not to stack up on youth. Hes taken his bumps with horrible season last year, couple decent signings from the UFA (Very possible with the cap Flames have) and couple depth player acquisitions and Ward in net and you would at least be competitive next year.

Not to mention Spezza is no over the hill bum, the guy had an off year last year, his trade value wud still be HIGH.

Last but not least, Im glad one of the best sim performers is gone from one of the better teams in the Gretzky.

I'm with you there. Any time a division rival gets weaker, I'm happy!

Yeah this move makes sense for both teams. Spezza is still very young and this instantly makes the season more fun for the Flames as they add a 82OV young fwd, a likely 78OV fwd and a 2nd pairing dman all in 1 move. Those pieces alone can lead to some victories, especially when you have a goalie like the Flames have in net. Plus Spezza is so young and Taveres if he has a great season this year will have a max rating of 74OV in the 2010-2011 season.

The trade is:

to the Pens:
#1 in 2009, MacArthur, Moen and Erskine

to the Flames:
Spezza, Salei, and rights to Koivu.

I will have more after the soccer game tonight.

Well first of all, thanks to Goffie for the offer and negotiations that came with it. I bounced a few different ideas off him but we both came back to the original offer. It was not an easy decision, I think it took me almost 4 full days to pull the trigger because for the first time since joining the league, I had actually become patient enough to try to rebuild but imo this is one of those offers that immediately gets my team better. That is the ultimate goal for me. Losing is no fun, its harder to make trades when you don't have very many good players. This deal allows me to have 2 top line players to go along with Kunitz. And in Salei, I get another top 4 dman and my defence now looks something like this:

Brewer-Gill
Girardi-Salei
Vaananen-Wisneiwski

Not great but not too bad.

Keeping JT puts me 2 years away from him even having a rating that would allow him to play. It was a difficult call and I understand why some gms feel like I shouldn't make the move. Thanks to the gms you gave your advice.

It's a good move for you Mike, it makes you better now and better in the future. It was the right move for the Flames franchise.

I think it's a good deal for the Flames as well. They need assets now and have a ton of cap room. The #1 overall pick is awesome but unless you get a generational player like Crosby or AO, you probably have to wait 2 years or so for the guy to have a legit impact in our league.

With that said, I think the Flames get a great return for the #1 overall. They added some decent players to it as well but got enough back. Spezza is a top line player who was a high pick himself. He's still young. Salei and Koivu are vets who are good in the sim now and who the Flames could probably trade for some good value at some point in the future.

This was a move that I was on the fence about for a long time before I actual threw the offer to Mike...I looked at his team and at mine and thought that this was a deal that could really work for us both. Rebuilding is not the most fun thing to do, and this gives Mike a few pieces to work with moving forward whether he keeps them or flips them it ultimately makes his team better asset wise. For me I had too many guys coming into RFA at the same time and I wouldn't have been able to have any depth if I found a way to keep them. This move gives me cap freedom as well as depth and a great young prospect moving forward. The trade talks were fun and I enjoyed the feedback that I got from others as well, as a deal this big will always have guys who look at it in a different light, but in the end most people thought it worked well for us both.
