Got tethering to work. Pretty straightforward. Goodbye hotspots.

One quick question:

I leave for the Dominican later today - if I turn off Data roaming, do I have to worry about getting a crazy bill anymore? Or is it all good now?

Or will I have to just use airplane mode the whole time to avoid any crazy charges? (outside of actually using the phone to call someone)

Gee, you guys remember a lot. Okay, if he doesn't mind the computer questions I'd be happy to explain market value assessment or how standard deviation affects portfolio design. Deal?

^ Turn off data roaming and you'll be fine. See, I do know some things.

If your phone rings, you don't answer it, it goes to voicemail and leaves you a 5 minute voicemail, you will be charged 5 minutes of roaming talk time (or so Fido's told me a few times). You're better off going into airplane mode. There's no downside, you can still use WiFi in airplane mode, and your battery will last longer since the radio is off.

That's not a brutal deal for iphone 3g users in my opinion. It's not great, but it's at least doable for the hardcore.

I still can't figure out why I'm eligible to upgrade as I purchased mine in July of last year. My inability to get a solid answer makes me paranoid that I'm not eligible at all. I'd also like to know that if I did upgrade this year if I'd be eligible to upgrade again next year when apple inevitably does this all again. My gut feeling is that I would not be.

I'm starting to wonder if the smart move would be to just stick with the 3g for another year. The 3gs is awesome and all, but it's not mind blowing. Apple has released a new version each year, so it isn't crazy to think they'll do it next summer as well. I'd hate to upgrade to a 3gs and not be able to upgrade next year to a phone with much cooler features. Ah the plight of the early adopter.
That's not too bad if Offer 2 works. You get the new phone for $199 and you could probably sell your 3G to make some, if not all, of it back. I think it would be smarter to stick with the 3G for another year and then upgrade to the next iteration of the phone (or if a better android/palm phone comes out, your free to jump to that one).

So I went to a Rogers outlet at 8:40 and it opened at 9am. I was 10th in line. First guy said he was there at 8am. As soon as they open, he goes in and asks to get an off-contract phone. They tell him they are not selling off-contract phones today, Rogers rules. First guy leaves fuming + 3 other people in line. They serve the next two people and when they get to the 3rd customer (at 9:30!!!) who orders a 32GB phone they say "Oh we didn't get any 32GB phones in our shipment." And you didn't think to tell the 25 people in line? Eight of us left. If I had any hair left, I would have pulled it out by now....

Just called in, sat on hold for 30mins...

...and found out I qualify for the full $199 subsidized price (Option 2), because of my average spend. Bam! 3GS on it's way! Easiest upgrade ever!

(What doesn't make sense, is my "average spend" is about $80/month... I didn't even have to pay the $35 processing fee, because of my "spend"...)

Can we expect your iPhone 3G to be in the Buy/Sell forum soon?

Probably... I haven't really thought about it, to be honest. Upgrading a phone isn't really that big of a deal, I do it once a year. I actually did pretty good this time, in that I resisted the urge to get the 32GB model. Progress!

Hmmm. I wonder what a 16GB 3G is even worth.

Well now that is interesting. I think most peoples average spend is about $80 per month. I wonder if you'll be eligible to upgrade next year as well? When I called a week ago the guy said I'd be able to upgrade each year. As mentioned in a previous post, he did give me reason to think he wasn't totally 100% with it, but I still liked his answer.

I have developed a strategy for this. Perhaps I'm overly pessimistic or just a worry wart, but I live in constant fear of losing my phone or having it break in some non-refundable way (water damage). If I do upgrade I think I'm just going to leave my 3g in a drawer and use it as a backup should something go awry. My cousin is much like me and he went 4 months without his iphone after losing it, went crazy and spent $700 on a new one. I'd rather not get into that dilly of a pickle.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I've been pretty fortunate to have never lost a phone, but there's no point in playing the odds forever.

I for one don't like this idea. I would much prefer you sell it to me so my wife can stop hating me for using her upgrade option to get myself an iPhone.

It took me 2.5 hours to get my 3GS at the Market Mall Fido today. Got there at 9:40 AM.

The computers went down at 10:00AM for about an hour because it was lunch time on the East Coast and the system was getting hammered.

I keep my iPhone in my front chest pocket. When I get home from work the first thing I do is check the water chemistry of my pool. There has been a couple of times when I've forgotten about the phone and caught it at the last second. So I'll be keeping my current iPhone in a safe place for the day that I don't catch it.....

Wow. Just reading that made me recoil a little bit. Kind of like a small muscle spasm in my back.

My friend is in red deer right now getting hers activated. She's been there since 9 and she was 3rd in line! She said it was nuts ... and that's red deer. I wasn't even sure if red deer had the cure for polio yet.

Andy Inahtko posted a sample video and the quality is impressively solid considering it's coming from a phone. That little speaker pics up a lot.

That's pretty decent.

Prepare for the onslaught of more hilarious youTube videos made by drunk people with iPhones.

Probably worth less than $100, unless you get it unlocked (not jailbroke, just unlocked from Rogers).

More than that. The 8GB 3Gs are going for $99 (qualified 3year terms only). The 16GB 3GSs are going for $199 for the same qualified 3 year term.

But the target market for the used 3G isn't to people who qualify for an upgrade, it's to people who don't qualify. So for them, the prices of the new phones are around the $600 mark.

At the very least, a white 16GB 3G iPhone with updated 3.0 software is worth $199 - although with the current prices listed on Kijiji (astronomically high), and the current level of excitement, I can see $299 happening as well.

I've never really been known for trying to rip people off or scam a quick buck... so if I were to list mine, I'd think $199 would be a fair deal. If it didn't sell for that, then I'd just stuff it in a drawer and keep it as a back up.

make sure you value the phone properly. lots of people will confuse that $99, $199 gets you the phone with a 3 year commitment. that 3 year commitment can be ~$3000 when data and a plan has been added.

an unlocked, cracked phone in decent condition should hold some value since you can simply take your Razr plan/simcard and transfer it to the iPhone and have it work instantly without anyone knowing that it has happened.
