Hey guys, I like to have a nice lawn, much like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.

But I have two decent size patches of crab grass (some people call it quack grass?) say 3'x3' on my front lawn.
I have heard of the following ways to deal with it;

Burn the patch with a gas fire and re-seed the spot.

Round-up the two spots and start all over again.

Let the grass gain some height, and since crab grass grows faster, dip a apaint brush in round-up on a clear day and just dab the tips of the crab grass.

Does anyone know how a guy can get rid of this stuff???

Isn't there a commercial that deals with that stuff? Just put it on your lawn and it'll grow? Sorry I can't remember the name but when I see the commercial again I'll post it.

Other than that... burning sounds like a good route but could be dangerous and maybe illegal? Make sure you use extra gas and news paper

Yeah I was wondering how my neighbors would react, but it would be a quick small fire.

Did you know if you mix equal parts gasoline and orange juice concentrate, you can make napalm? One can make all kinds of explosives with common household items… if one were so inclined. — Tyler Durden

I bought mine at Canadian Tire, but I don't see it on their site anymore. I think Wal-Mart also carries it. Allows you to burn a specific area and re-seed. If you use Round-up the poison will stay in the ground for a while.

Didn't that rancher start that big grass fire last year trying to exterminate all gophers with one of those?

I say embrace quack grass, crab grass, or whatever you want to call it. It's drought resistant, so great for our area. Hell, I suspect it's probably even nuclear bomb resistant. The cockroaches have to have something to eat after they survive a nuclear holocaust, and quack grass appears to be the likeliest candidate to me. So embrace it, go with the flow. If you let it uniformly take over your yard you'll have the greenest lawn on the block and save a pot full on your water bill to boot.

Not true. Round Up is totally inert once it hits the soil. It only kills plants that it actually touches part of the plant.

That said, burning is probably better, because it will clear away all the old grass and some of the roots. I think gas might be a bad idea however, due to toxins etc.

Yup. All Round-Up is is glysophate...it becomes inert as soon as it touches dirt If you really want to smoke it, try and get your hands on some hardcore broadleaf stuff from an agro supply place...maybe try Assert, Achieve or Puma Super...just go talk to somebody in the store and they'll point you in the right direction.

not only do I 3rd this comment about it becoming inert when it hits the soil, but a botanist friend of mine thinks that you might be able to drink it. He has given it to mice (or some other rodent) and they're fine.

I don't know that I would go that far (and doubt that he'll ever actually drink it either!), but its pretty safe actually.

Yup it is drinkable. I wouldn't drink it either, but it won't kill you (unless you go crazy with it haha).

I have looked this up online and everything I read tell me that you guys are correct.

So why is it that any time I have tried to put seed where I have applied Roundup the seeds won't germinate, but right beside they seem to do just fine?
