So this would allow you to connect to your computer via wireless and just watch pull up files from the computer without having to use usb?

No, cause he is buying the WIRED adaptor. If you have a certain type of router you can bridge the connections to make it wireless. Honestly, if you are not that technical, just stick with the USB hard drive method.
They do support certain USB Wireless adaptors however.
I would recommend reading the forums that were posted in the last page.

So the major benefit is that you don't have to burn dvd's?

Do you have a DVD player that will play back 1080p content?
That, to me is the MAJOR benefit. Full HD playback.

New Popcorn hour C-200.. reported on Engadget. Looks pretty interesting..
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/16/p...else/#comments
Quote:
C200 contains an upgraded Sigma SMP8643 667 Mhz processor, HDMI 1.3 out, two SATA slots, a drive bay for mounting your own HDD, DVD or even Blu-ray drive (requires internal HDD or 1GB USB stick) and supports a list of networking standards, codecs and containers far too long to recount here
|
I was going to buy a WD TV HD Media Player (brutal name btw) but now I might wait and see what the price is on this one...

If the latest popcorn hour with the added netwrok feature is around $300 now, I can't imagine the newest one is going to be any cheaper.
For the price, the WDTV still seems to be the best bang for your buck. I'll have mine running wireless this week, i'll report how it does on streaming MKV files and whatnot

Exactly. For $99 or even $149 the WD is a steal for what it does AFAIC.
Wireless would be OK or networking, but really, it takes me a few minutes to copy an MKV file to my 16 GB flash drive and it takes the player about 3 seconds to see it and read it. A couple of minutes and I'm watching what I want to watch.

I agree completely, having a thumb drive is great and quick for viewing. I just want to setup Wireless on here to shut all the popcorn/other lovers out there up. I'm not spending $300+ for something that a product for a 1/3 of the price will do,

I just had to comment on the name thing. Why is it a brutal name? It's made by WD, It plays on your TV, and its a HD Media player.
Popcorn Hour doesn't make popcorn, and it can be used longer then an hour. now THAT's a brutal name.

Why?
If you can afford it, what's the difference. Not everyone wants to buy something then have to fiddle with it to update the firmware, open something up to put in a network drive, or go buy a second device to make it wireless etc. I don't think I want to bother and I'm pretty tech capable and have done other similar things.

You still have to configure PCH to work with a network. You still need to insert a drive if you want to store videos on it. There are still firmware updates for PCH. It's the same damn thing. I was going to buy a PCH before I saw the WDTV, but why would I waste $200 on something I can easily configure myself.

It is too long... I think the should name it something short and pithy. The name makes it awkward to use in a conversation.
"Hey man, I just picked up the new popcorn hour you should come check it out"
Friend - "No way dude, I have the Western Digital TV High Definition Media Player. It does the same thing but its only 1/3 the price"
"But popcorn hour has wireless !"
Friend - "Yah but you can configure the Western Digital TV High Definition Media player with an adapter so it plays wireless"
See, its too long, and you can't really call it WD or TV or HD media player because those are all to generic and can refer to other things...
I think western digital needs to get its marketing department to step up its game.
Not that it makes any difference to me.. I don't really buy products based on their name. But a product with a catchy name will definitely get my attention as opposed to one that is awkardly wrong but technically accurate.

well, technically TV should be Television.
and why not just call it the WDTV box. What would you like them to call it? The WD Super HD 9000?

I guess if you like the look of it (and I'd say the new PCH looks awesome) and u dont mind the price, it seems like a good price..
still think Western Digital High Definition Television is a better value

If that new PCH supports blu-ray drives in that drive bay; that would be killer. I kinda doubt it would.
The sage box is still best bang for the buck. It does everything the WD box does but includes networking so you can also view YouTube, RSS feeds, network encoding, etc. The software is updated with new features every few months. It's more of a complete media center unit for only $50 more.

Yup, the WD box is better value, especially since it can be networked so easily. I have the dream where all my media is on one server and all my TVs, stereos, computer, etc, so I like the network aspect. The WD box is priced like a non-network device but is easily networkable, so hence the great value.
