They've gone into the World Cup pretty heavily hyped since '98 and failed to produce any tangible results. Anyways I think it's a pretty big feat for a country to win one World Cup at all considering there's only been 17 of competitions (with 32 teams) and two teams have combined to win 53% of them.
I think Jagger hit the nail on the head when he said it's more the British media that trumps up England than their fans. I don't know any England fans, myself included, that expected them to win in '06 or '02.

Bah! Italy is junk, I'd rather watch two hobos tussling over a wilted head of cabbage than Italy vs Anybody.
The only good thing about an Italy match is when they pick out some Italian hottie in the crowd and stay away from the action for a few seconds. I usually assume the Italian announcers are saying something like, "This young lady has been hired to teach the team machismo, but alas, the incurable tendency to dive and cry has been too much for her to overcome so far."

I don't like Italy much but they have improved since they played for 0-0 penalty shootouts every single game throughout the 90s. And paid for it.
The 94 final is still the #1 remedy for insomnia.
They're more offensive now. I think they scored like 12 goals in the World Cup. They're Euro campaign was a joke cause of a bad manager. I expect Italy to score goals next week and in the WC next year. And they don't dive too much anymore. Brazil dives more these days and I love Brazil

Never mind facts, they get in the way of my Italy-hating.
They could completely transform their game and play interesting soccer without shenanigans, and I'd still hate them for sucking the life out of international football for a decade. I'll also never forgive them for forcing me to cheer for the French.
Anyway, where are you guys watching these qualifiers? I never see anything on, albeit I only check the HD channels now...

Theres a lot to hate about Italy, the grease for starters, if they wrung out their hair the Italian Soccer team could keep the world supplied for engine lubricant for decades.

Really? Ugh. What have the french ever done besides produce the hottest news anchor ever (click my sig)? At least Italy is responsible for:
- taking over the world
- stealing pasta from the chinese and making it taste good
- changing sides during a war (gotcha!)
- having an insane amount of hot women
- winning the World Cup four times
- being shaped like a foot kicking a ball
- having ridiculously hot women
- producing the best wine (debatable)
- burning down Carthage and making the Carthaginians watch their crap city burn
- birthing historical greats such as the four ninja turtles
- smelling good, unlike France
- not sucking, unlike Limeyland
- having really, really hot women
I look forward to rebuttals.

Heh heh... The obvious answer is that yeah, you're right. The truth is that real estate in Italy is re-donk-ulous. A friggin apartment in Rome is over 1 million euro. That, and their mamas cook so well that they refuse to leave until they've got a wife to cook like mama. Italians.  Glad I'm Canadian...

Saudi Arabia finish 3rd in the group and now have a 2-legged playoff against Bahrain. Winner of that goes to a 2-legged playoff against New Zealand.
