Icon59 Oilers/Flyers make pretty big trade

Well this one is pretty significant.

Flyers get the UFA rights to Roberto Luongo

Oilers get

Mike Smith
Ryan Suter
T.J.Oshie
2010 1st round pick Columbus

Luongo is the best goalie on the planet and solidifies that position for the Flyers for the next decade. So it's always a hard trade to make for any GM. But we do have Pekka Rinne who we like as an emerging starter, and Mike Smith was effective for the Lightning last year although he is trapped in a gong show. We are a bit light on assets and Suter gives us another legitimate top 2 defenceman, and Oshie had a nice rookie season last year with St.Louis. The 2010 first is always a gamble, but it's an asset with value.

We hope that a tandem with some upside behind a better team out front will work for us. But we know the Flyers just got a guy who's a great goaltender who now makes them a serious force. Joe told me to name a price...I did and he was willing to pay it..so my bluff was called and as a man of honor I followed through.

Wooohooo Go Flyers, Go Lou

Suter, Oshie, Smith are all bums, i was gonna waive them till Syl asked for em, I couldnt stop laughing. Yesssssh

Luo doesn't look happy leaving Edmonton, seriously? I shud just trade his arse

Sucks to see them go, especially Oshie who Id hidden away from all requests. Now we need a Top 4 dman and top 6 forward. Thanks for the deal Syl, like he said, he named it I paid it.

Good job to both teams for getting a deal like this done. It's always tough to trade 'tenders.

Last time I acquired a big player from the west, a GM said that same thing, guess what I did?

Wow, awesome trade for Philly!

I'm not a big fan of Mike Smith but Syl does have Rinne so Smith will be the #2.

Philly needed an improvement in goal and they got it. Philly will be a force next year.

So glad Luongo is now out east. This is a fair deal, Syl got some quality assets back and with Rinne he has the luxury of making a deal like this. It fits well for both sides imo.

Dammit, Buongo out East? That sucks balls. The trade seems relatively even and I understand why the Oilers made this trade. Good job getting this trade done.

Little known fact that the Wild darn near landed Luongo at the deadline - Syl got a lot more though in this deal then I think in the one we had been talking about.

Yeah, I'm putting a lot of faith in Rinne here, I'll admit to that. I guess I'm hoping that by putting a top 5 defence of Gonchar, Suter, Mitchell, Bieksa, Carle in front of a goalie like Rinne that I'll be able to get by. Afterall these guys ranked 9th, 25th, 34th, 42nd, and 77th amongst all NHL defenceman in time on ice last year.

I might have made a mistake here though as I didn't really look into this SimonT SIM and how goalie durability works. I know the last two times I had a big number one guy he was done by the end of the 3rd round and couldn't win any games in the final round.

And Neil....Suter, Oshie and a 1st round pick are all worthless? If you say so.

This was one deal that the Flyers could afford to overpay on as they needed a top flight goalie. I like the return that Syl got, he just gotta hope that Rinne is the real deal and that the goaltender carousal in Nashville doesn't continue. Overall this was a huge deal and good to see something like this get done.

Huh? I never said they were worthless. All 3 are good additions to add t o your club. If you are refering to me not mentioning them, it had nothing to do with them being worthless. I just commented on the goalie aspect of the deal.

Yeah, that is a key. But Rinne is a guy whom I think was at least a legitimate prospect before and got some time in the minors before getting the chance to be the guy. Whereas Ellis never really was considered a great prospect as he only ever had one AHL season when he was 26-27 as a starting goalie. Even Mason who did struggle a bit after he got the job at an older age has still managed to find a starting job in the NHL and will likely rate around 79-80OV this coming year. So if thats the downside for Rinne, I could live with that. No doubt Luongo is a guy who solidifies whoever has him in goal for another 8-9 years though...hence why it was a hard trade to make.

Pretty good deal for both sides. Although it's tough to lose on of the best players at a position like goalie, the Oil still have some decent options and just added 2 very good young skaters without giving one up. On the other hand the Flyers are a very young team but seem to be good enough and have the intent to win this season, so trading some of that youth for a top goalie makes sense for them.

Although who knows how the new sim will effect goalies. With the old sim the better rated goalies weren't always the ones who performed the best. So basically good deal for both sides aslong as Luongo plays great in net in the new sim.
