They didnt need to blow up the offence, but from the beginning it didnt look like Cutler wanted to be there and his childish actions proved that at least to me (although I have never liked him, then again I liked Jake the snake ).
He is not in untouchable QB category in the NFL. There are 5 or 6 maybe that are. The rest are employees to earn money to play football. And if he isnt then you dont pay him Manning/Brady dollars which is what he would have wanted (his agent is after all the same as fancy pants Brett Favre) so we know how he and his clients act durring contract time.
What happened to change them from pass first to run first is simply that they cut ties with Cutler and decided that Orton was good enough at what they needed him to be. If you have pieces around you, you dont have to be Manning or Brady. A guy like Big Ben who I like but dont consider to be great is a prime example. Keep the turnovers low. I am not saying the pieces are in place for next year, far from it but that looks to be their strategy.
In my mind they are getting back to what was there Superbowl formula. Elway was on the downside of his career so they turned into a run first team with solid but not great defense. Their run game controlled everything and allowed their D to get rest.
I am hoping for a 6-10 season this year, anything else IMO will be gravy. 2010-2011 season will show if this strategy will work.

6-10 could win the AFC West this season.

Apparently Alex Smith is looking good in the OTAs. Per the GM:

He's better than he's ever been as an NFL quarterback

I'm not sure you can put a lot of stock in what is said 3 months before the season, but a young QB getting a bit of confidence back would be a good start. I've been a Shaun Hill booster (all he does is compete all out and, somehow, win more often than not), but a real competition pushing each other to be better so the Niners can choose the best QB instead of the least inept QB would be a nice change.

Its a nice problem to have. So many teams only have the choice of the least inept QB. KC had the same problem last season and only by the process of elimination, due to injury , did the least inept QB emerge. Still didn't help their record though.

Even if you have a good QB a good running game is key. From everything I've read about my Cowboys this offseason they intend to put the ball in Jones and MB's hands more often. Just makes sense to control the ball, take the heat off your QB and give your offensive line the ability to dish out some punishment to the d-line. Even ditching Owens methinks has partly to do with is besides the other issues always involved with him. He demands the ball and wants it deep downfield. They still have a speed guy but now they can concentrate more on a ball possession game. Keep the defense off the field more. I'm hoping that is the plan as I'd like to see them run the ball a whole lot more often.

Its not a nice problem yet. Every team thinks they are improved at this time of year. Until a month of the season has come and gone no one knows where teams stand.

I'm guessing 9-7. I think they are getting old in a hurry. That may change in training camp, but with their current personnel they are on a down slope.

Eagles give McNabb a new contract. Interesting that they just gave him more money but didn't extend the length. I guess they still have faith that Kolb is going to be a starter in the NFL. I don't.

That division has also changed since the Pats went 16-0 in the regular season. They won't be able to get an easy 6-0 record against that division this season.

I'm really starting to dislike Brandon Marshall. The guy has another one of his troubled offseasons and then has the nerve to skip mini-camp and demand a new contract? Moron.

If Goddell had any balls he would suspend Vick for life. I thought illegal gambling was something that the NFL took very, very, seriously? Not to mention associating with organized crime.

I'm a bit wary about Vick being re-instated. Mora made a comment the other week ( http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4249429 ) that Vick should be allowed to play again, and I really don't want Vick playing for the Seahawks but if Hasselbeck runs into injury problems again it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities considering the relationship there.

Anyone who shaves there number into there head is an a$$. Unfortunately they need him as a option for Orton as he is going to need all the help he can get this season.
As an aside, I dont really have a problem with players missing these mini camps. They dont get paid to go to them, and its normally not in the contracts. Teams use them as a reasoning usually to cut players they dont want anymore so when a player knows the team is in a tough place I have no problem with them using it as a bargaining chip. Especially a position player like a reciever. Lineman or QB I would have more of a problem with as they arent solely position players and rely on the goup to succeed. I dont like it when a player from a Team I cheer for does it, but that doenst change my stance on the whole BS mini camp thing. Its like unpaid OT at work IMO.

You need to make a distinction. There are optional and mandatory OTAs, and the mandatory ones are in the agreement between the players and the league. On that basis then the players are paid for them.
