hahaha this is pretty funny!
Nearly 500 pickets had surrounded the downtown Telus building by noon, carrying Telecommunications Workers Union placards claiming they had been locked out. Hundreds more picketed other Telus locations across the city.
"Make no mistake, this is a full-scale strike by the TWU. They've asked their members to go out," said Karen Radford, an executive vice-president with Telus in Calgary.
Radford said half the unionized employees in the city crossed the picket line to report for work Thursday including 65 per cent of customer care personnel, 40 per cent of operator services and 1,000 technicians.
"Our doors are open," said Radford. "Thousands of employees have crossed and are in here working. How can that be a lockout?"

I know 5 people that have crossed the picket lines here. Mgmt is telling them to cab it to work or get dropped off. They think it's ok here in Calgary but in BC....
Workers in BC were sabatoging equipment a few months back.

I was reading about that in the Edmonton Journal a couple days go.
The TWU's Bob Goodenow wannabe was whining about how if Telus imposed a contract, then his employees would be "locked out" as a result.
Err, no stupid, if you dont go to work, then you are striking.
Unions are a joke.

A few days back as well. Apparently the union thinks that what Telus is doing is illegal as well, but the union just got a nasty slap....
Labour Board Rejects TWU Complaints.
There have been a total of 18 vandalism incidents against Telus since Telus suspended taking union dues off our cheques. Coincidence? Only one was in Alberta, but it was awfully close to the BC border.... wonder why?

here in BC there WERE lockout signs on the picketers last week...
they have since (wisely) changed their tune.

Well it seems that Telus is blocking all of their customers from viewing a TWU operated website (Voices for Change).
As much as I hate unions, I think I hate Telus more.

Telus is not blocking access to the union's site ( www.twu-canada.ca), but rather two other sites that include message boards for union members.
Telus's reasoning, which I can sort of understand (althought I don't agree with it) is that they are blocking the sites for safety reasons. Apparently the sites are being used to post pictures of TWU members crossing picket lines as well as giving instructions on how to overwhelm the phone system.

I'd like to thank them for that. They're trying to protect my safety. It's too bad you can't respect that.

That's ridiculous and borderline illegal.
Nothing like 1920's-style bullying and sabotage to further your union cause.

Yes. According to union bylaws, they can take me to their 'court' and fine me $1000. However, they need 9 people to back up the allegations and actually go to their 'court'. Also, because of the same union contract, I think I may just take the union president to 'court' for not doing his job as well... He's supposed to be bargaining for me, and he's not doing so in good faith, which is against his contract. I know it's probably a drop in the bucket of what he makes, but it would be a nice fata you to him and everyone else who thinks they are doing their jobs.

So Firefly, I'll be the first to ask. Why don't you leave? Sounds like a shinguardty company to work for, so why not go somewhere else?

That's in regards to the fact that they banned access to the website with pictures of scabs on it. They did it to protect my safety. Do you think if my picture was up on a website calling me a scab to the world, my safety wouldn't be in danger? They're actually planning on slapping a lawsuit on the creators of said website for defamation of character, not obeying privacy laws, etc.

If it was a shinguardty company to work for, I wouldn't cross a picket line to do it. I love my job, I love the pay, I love the people I work with and for. Telus gives me excellent perks like tickets to movies, and a free jacket in the winter, and a free umbrella, and a zippo barbeque lighter, and many many other things. I generally like the customers, and like what I do. I don't plan on being here forever, but if I was, I wouldn't mind it, and would consider moving up into management, or going into marketing.
The only thing I have a problem with is the union. They've been 'bargaining' for 5 years and haven't come up with anything, but the exact same agreement with raises. That's what I paid them for? Five years and that's it? They aren't bargaining, they're creating fear among employees, and they're full of shinguard. They are the NHLPA of the telecommunications industry. They've told me to get another job, with the competition. Funny, Shaw is our competition... same union though.
I have no complaints about Telus. I won't get into all the details, but let's just say they're treating me like gold for crossing the picket line to support them. They appreciate me, and I appreciate what they've given me.
Telus has been named one of Canada's top 10 employers for a number of years, and no, that isn't just because of their union agreements. It's because of the little things they do, their equal opportunity stance, etc. I work for Mobility, and Telus Mobility has been named the #1 Wireless Company in all of North America. I'm proud to work for them.

So Telus is blocking a site that has pictures of you and your co-workers who've crossed the line? The people who are striking and would (potentially) "attack/harass" you, won't be in the office, thus won't be affected by this blocking..no?
just curious

This bites. I feel for you. Not many people this day and age can say as many nice things about the company they work for.
Darn those meritocracies that reward people for working hard and liking their job!!
When I am looking to hire people, I am most interested in character, honesty, and the person's reasons for WANTING to work with me. If I was your boss and you said these things to me, then you would have to really fata up to not have a job for life. I hope your boss knows this commitment.
