Which reminds me... If anyone with current student ID (and doesn't plan on buying a Mac for themselves) wants to make $50, please send me a PM.

I'm pretty sure there will be no check. I bought software from the apple education store and while it said they would check (ask me for an i.d), they never did.

Yeah, I'm really not sure how it works. I just went through the entire process online and got right up to the part where it asks me for my credit card, and not once was I asked for an ID number.

I bet the hard part is with the rebate afterwards. That's probably where you really have to prove you're a student. If it turns out someone ordered online, but isn't a student, the worst case scenario for Apple is they gave them a $50 discount (on the MacBook) to buy both a MacBook and an 8GB iTouch.

Actually, they'd probably just hit the credit card used for the transaction to recover the $50 discount anyway.

Come to think of it, I may have had to send them a photocopy of my id card. I assume as long as you can provide that you'll be ok (shouldn't matter how old it was, when i did mine the card was almost 6 years old). You'll have to buy both the computer and the touch and then they'll send you a cheque for the amount of the touch. It's a small risk, but I highly doubt they are going to run the card number of every single rebate request they get.

I have bought stuff with a student ID that is no longer valid. I think they may check very, very rarely.

Check out the refurb store. Thers's some good deals there as well.

They dont check. You can enter 12345678 in the ID and it will work. My buddy has done this plenty of times.

I've bought about half a dozen "refurb" items from Apple (macbooks to ipods) and have never had an issue. Highly recommended.

I've used the Education discount twice, and online they don't check, in the store I didn't have ID, and the guy just said it was fine if I logged into some education website with my login / password.

Apple seems pretty lenient with that.

I've had better luck with refurbs than original parts. I figure if it is a refurb then it has gone through testing at least twice.

I have an IBM Thinkpad refurb I got 5+ years ago that still works, although if I move it then it has issues. So I just leave it beside my computer and use it to stream my slingbox.

Is it going to allow me to purchase with the education discount? Will they allow it to go through then charge me the difference? They must have a better way of checking.

I don't think it matters if it is current or not. My sister just purchased a new Apple computer and got the discount under her former teacher's certificate number. and she has not taught in 20 some years. They just asked for her teaching certificate number.

Was that at the store or online? If it was at the store, did she have to show the certificate?

I have my old DeVry ID, but if I have to show it, they'll see it expired in 2003.

I want to get a new laptop + ipod touch through my wife's educational discount, but she doesn't start teaching until the fall, and probably won't get her card/number from the university until late august... If we brought some sort of documentation like her contract, would the Apple store give you the discount? Any guesses?

I'm pretty sure last years promotion lasted until October.

Edit: and this year it's the same

After you receive our Mac and iPod, download the rebate coupon, and mail in the completed claim form by October 8, 2009.
I don't see why you couldn't go to the online apple education store, buy your stuff now and then send in the rebate form when your wife's card # comes in.

Yep. I didn't even buy my MBP from Apple (got it from U of C Microstore) and have taken it in to the Apple Store for service. In fact, am taking it back in (again) this weekend...

Typically, they just want some sort of proof -- it doesn't have to be an ID card. For example, I've got an educational discount in-store by just showing them that I could log into my staff account in WebCT. No guarantees, of course, but they do seem pretty flexible.

I always use my old ID, and have purchased numerous computers and ipods over the years.

Last September they had this same deal, and we purchased a macbook pro, as well as an ipod touch. I sent in all my receipts to get the rebate, and had nothing but problems with the rebate company, saying I sent in the wrong UPC code, not answering there phones, yadayada. I called Apple to complain, and they refunded the price of the Ipod touch... a few weeks later I also got a check in the mail from the rebate company.
