Wow Captain Crunch is hard to please.
Personally, I've completely erased all other Trek out of my mind due to this movie. For me, it didn't happen and I'm glad to be in this universe.
As for the Deus Ex Machina effects of the plot - well the whole idea is that the Universe is somehow moving to balance things and straighten them back out.
My only problem is that a tiny drop of red matter created an artificial singularity. Spock crashed the whole damn Jellyfish ship with the giant tank of red matter into the Romulan ship...shouldn't something ridiculous happen? Like a super ultra massive black hole instead of one that looks to be the same size as the others?

I watched fanboys this weekend, which I completely enjoyed. The exchange between the Trekkers and the Star Wars fans was pretty funny.

LOL I thought this exact same thing! A big red high energy carnivore with gangly limbs and tons of surface area to radiate heat.

D.E.M. Sensors!
EDIT: CURSES H&L!
Or another question was how did a 17 year old and a pilot who can't take off the parking brake get to man the flagship of the fleet?
EDIT: Oh wait, the fleet was somewhere else, so it was cadets manning the whole thing. Who sends the entire fleet out?

Yup, now that the "establish the reboot, introduce the characters, etc etc" is out of the way, there's potential for even better movies.
Hopefully they don't screw it up (a la X-Men or Spiderman 3).

[ Gwen and Jason encounter the chompers]
Gwen DeMarco: What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?
Jason Nesmith: 'Cause it's on the television show.
Gwen DeMarco: Well forget it! I'm not doing it! This episode was badly written
Fred Kwan: Hey, Commander. Listen, we found some beryllium on a nearby planet. And we might be able to get there if we reconfigure the solar matrix in parallel for endothermic propulsion.
Jason Nesmith: We'll do that!
Guy Fleegman: All right!
Fred Kwan: [ to his engineering team] That's right again. That's... come on, group hug

It doesn't render TOS or the Berman era as lost in space. The Prime timeline is still alive and well and will continue in Trek Lit. While Star Trek is considerably inconsistent on time travel I look will reiterate what i've said before. Look at is like this classic Worf ep of TNG
Parallels
At the climax of the episode we see several variations of the Enterprise D and consequences of what ifs in the TNG world. I mean look at all the Enterprises. NuTrek is one of many versions. We're not talking about one universe that now ceases to exist, we're talking about a multiverse.
/end nerd defense of NuTrek rant.
Edit: I just read my link and at the bottom is says that Roberto Orci invoked the same defense as I did. Either that makes me an uber nerd or a hack who ruined Star Trek and still wants your money while destroying your childhood.

What I wondered was why the Romulans didn't just shoot the Red Matter into our sun rather than drill a hole in the earth.

what a great movie that was. The Fred Kwan character made the film. When I'm in a crappy mood and just want to laugh, this one goes in the DVD player.

Why did they even need to drill a hole aside from lame plot reasons? Just drop a droplet in orbit and watch earth go bye-bye.
BTW, curse you for ruining another part of the movie now. Quick, some nerd think of a way to reconcile/retcon this in!

That one was a good movie actually, and yeah Fred just sells that movie.

heat from sun would melt/disintegrate red matter before it reaches a critical area of sun.
hole needs to be drilled because red matter implodes...and center of planet is not as hot as sun

Fred Kwan: That was a hell of a thing
Gwen DeMarco: Fred, you had a part people loved. I mean, my TV Guide interview was six paragraphs about my BOOBS and how they fit into my suit. No one bothered to ask me what I do on the show.
Fred Kwan: You were... umm, wait...
Gwen DeMarco: I repeated the computer, Fred.
Guy Fleegman: I'm just a glorified extra, Fred. I'm a dead man anyway. If I'm gonna die, I'd rather go out a hero than a coward.
Fred Kwan: Guy, Guy... maybe you're the plucky comic relief. You ever think about that?
Guy Fleegman: Plucky?
Fred Kwan: Hey guys, I just wanted you to know that, the reactors won't take it; the ship is breaking apart and all that... Just FYI
so many more...

Because due to his hell bent hatred of Spock Prime for not saving Romulus the drill to the planets core was add time the attach on Vulcan as Spock watched in agony from Delta Vega.

damn you an your stupid logic.
apparently the nero drilled into the plot and red matter was shot in the plot hole...therefore creating a larger plot hole. that good enough for you!

Okay, I'll take on the Red Matter plot holes.
Red matter is a new experimental synthetic matter or recently discovered natural phenomenon that is still not very well understood in Spock Prime's time.
Some properties of Red Matter:
Energy does not correlate with Mass.
It is highly stable, and therefore, "igniting" Red Matter is difficult to achieve.
Any reaction of Red Matter, no matter how large or small the quantity, will create a singularity of about the same size. (Hence, Spock's plan to stop the Super Nova failed because he himself didn't realize that it would take several red matter singularities to prevent Romulus' destruction.) They only need a small amount to start a singularity, so Nero only uses a little bit to destroy each planet, he's waiting to use more.
That or you could say that Red Matter is in a inverse relationship to energy. The larger the amount of Red Matter, the more stable it is and the harder it is to create a singularity. That's why the black holes that swallowed the Narada were smaller than the one that destroyed Vulcan: more red matter was used.
Because the substance is so stable, getting it to cause a singularity is a difficult process. With Spock's knowledge, it would be easy to use red matter to destroy a whole planetary system, though he hasn't quite figured out how to stop a star from going nova. Nero, who is not a scientist, doesn't understand how to use the stuff properly, so he resorts to his natural assumptions about planetary demolition, drill a hole in the rock and drop the bomb down the hole. For some reason, this process works (something to do with planetary gravity wells and subspace), at least well enough for Nero's purposes.
Wow is my nerd ever showing... and I'm not even a big fan of Trek.

Ok my next question is, was Nero hanging around for 25 years in that exact spot waiting for future Spock to show up?

Nope, he arrived there 25 years later. Originally the Narada was captured by Klingons and they spent 25 years on a prison planet before rescuing the Narada and blowing up the Klingons.
They cut that stuff from the film because it would mean that the Klingons would have 25 years to reverse engineer future technology and, therefore, would have been able to kick Federation ace. So instead they just left another plot hole that none of my sciencey magic can close.

Yeah, the whole Rura Penthe sequence was not smartly thought out.
