Default I Love Deerfoot Trail

Yup. Its true. I actually do LOVE Deerfoot trail, especially in the morning rush-hour. Its like playing some perverted game of Mario Kart except with crazier moves.

My favorite part is how I always let a gap open up between me and the guy in front that is larger than average. This is so I can avoid using my brakes while everyone around me guns it as hard as they can for all of three seconds before having to slam on the brakes again.

Same thing on the ride home commute. Except this time people don't seem to want to mash into my lane as much and therefore if you are lucky enough to get stuck behind me, you will have a nice consistent speed without needing to tap the brakes every five seconds.

I love watching some of the morons who try to cut through traffic like its going to make things any easier. This morning in an effort to get by me, some crazy broad in her Dodge Mini-Van must have swooped across all the lanes multiple times trying to get around me and a wall of trucks in front of her. As it turns out she could have stayed behind me the whole time and made it through faster without all the wear and tear on her vehicle and the extra gas wasted.

Instead she smashed into the back of a logging truck.

Other Deerfootisms that make me grin are things like the construction zone after the Cath Robe Bridge (spelling?) that has been there seemingly forever, but doesn't look any different and still rides like driving over the moguls on a ski-hill! Honorable mention also has to go to the idiots who designed the Southland/Deerfoot/Anderson interchange. Pure genius.

So in closing, enjoy the ride. Its like a giant game of F-Zero! If you hang back, let a large gap open up in front of you and have the right tunes:

a) You won't have to brake anywhere near as much or as hard.

b) You will save gas.

and most importantly...

c) You will see lots of morons who will make you laugh.

Stupid drivers.

Carry on.

How many cars manage to cut infront of you during your commute?? I've seen people who let 2-3 cars a minute cut infront because they have a braking aversion.

Calf Robe, named after the former chief of the Siksika.

A few years ago, they had his family do a ceremony on the bridge to bless it and hopefully give it good omens to stop all the accidents.

It didn't help.

Probably 5-10 per trip, going most of the length quite often though. For me it's not just my aversion to brakes, but the lack of desire to go hammer down on the gas once a small gap opens only to slam on the breaks 5 seconds later.

When its jammed up enough and you can feel the stress of everyone around you I simply find a nice speed that allows people to rev their mighty little engines and whiz by and get far enough away before they have to brake again.

Thank God epileptic's cannot drive. Sometimes the brake lights flickering everywhere remind me of a rave.

Also, how did I know YOU would be the first response about actual driving...lol!

It's all the morons who think "oh its the Calf Robe Bridge, I've gotta slow down" and then slam on their brakes that cause all the problems.

It's named after Ben Calf Robe a Blackfoot elder. Besides “The Stephen Colbert Bridge” is a pretty bad name.

I'm very glad I don't have to drive Deerfoot during the rush. I like my sanity.

You just highlighted my biggest pet peeve when driving around Calgary (or any other city really) - the A-holes that steal the gap I've given myself to somewhat safely follow another vehicle. Even if its barely 1 car length! Why are the majority of drivers on the deerfoot 500 so ignorant to this? They had to learn it when getting a licence right?

I got a summer job a bunch of years back driving a gravel truck & pup for a landscaping company. I HATED having to deal with the deerfoot - booting along with a full load of gravel was stressful. The second a gap of over a car length opened up in front of me some arsehole would race up, swerve in, and lay on the brakes. The result was me trying to lay on the brakes to avoid turning them into a freaking stain on the road. Brutal.
