Last week for Jay Leno on the Tonight Show

Ugh, Leno is terrible. Fallon seems alright, but I've only seen a couple of his shows. For those comparing his nervousness to Conan's start are wayyyy off. Conan was a writer turned host. Fallon has been in front of a camera for years and should know how to behave.

Can't wait for the Cone-bone to return.

Conan O'Brien was doing some (Not as much as Fallon, but still had done a few pilots among other things) on-camera work as well as writing when he earned the job to be the new host of Late Night, so I'm not entirely sure where you're saying their comparison of nervousness is "wayyy off".

It's not that Jimmy Fallon isn't comfortable in front of the camera, he's just not a good interviewer and was never really that funny to begin with. Learning how to interview a guest is a key element to hosting a talk show. Conan was brutal at interviewing, he wasn't getting good guests and the chemistry with Andy Richter was forced for a good 3 years until he learned how to corral his humor and identity in order to make a good show. I'm not sure what it would take for Jimmy Fallon to turn the corner, but I suppose I could make an honest assessment after a few seasons on the air. Even though I don't like him, I'll still give him a chance because he has had great interview guests and musical acts. The Roots being his house band makes it even better for someone like me, but his features and games need work. Those are things that keep me in after the monologue.

I can't figure out what CBS doesn't work harder to improve Ferguson's show. This guy is the funniest and most talented and natural comedian and all around hilarious guy in and of himself in late-night but he can't do it all himself.

He doesn't have a band, has a tiny studio, and they book him the absolutely worst guests. I usually only watch his monologue (always epic because it's like one continuing story he tells himself instead of a string of random unconnected lame jokes like all the rest) and I turn it off when the no-name guests arrive.

Happy to see Leno with the new show. He will have better viewership than Conan. Leno is just a great, down to earth comedian where Conan is a bit of a clown.

Conan will have to tone it down and I don't know if he has it in him. It's like expectig Michael Richards do a smart-political stand up routine or Jim Carey play in a sad, drama role. It just won't work IMO.

1. Conan - hands-down funniest host on tv - great creative team
2. Craig - also very funny, but could use better guests
3. Leno - could be funnier - has watered-down his humor for his lowest-common denominator audience - I hope Conan does not do the same thing
4. Letterman - used to be the best host, but now he is a grouchy curmudgeon, going through the motions - Paul Schaefer annoys me
5. Fallon - needs to gain confidence - Roots are the best TV band ever
6. Kimmel - frat-boy humor
7. Daly - never seen it

Do Jon Stewart and Colbert belong on this list?

That's too bad for you...since The Truman show was his first "serious" role. This guy is an amazing actor and one of the best in both comedy and dramatic roles IMHO.

Then you're doing yourself a disservice by missing one of the greatest movies about relationships ever made. That's no hyperbole. Eternal Sunshine is an amazing movie.

Back to the point though, I find Conan to be of the inmature humor type, which may not work for the audience of the Tonight Show.

as far as influencing an entire generation of TV viewers, i think Stewart and Colbert should be at the top of the list. and as sad as it is, they're one of the few places on American TV to find actual news items without having to wade through hours of BS filler

The last show was quite a bit different than Conan's, but wasn't bad. Nice touch with the 60+ kids that his staff had since he started the gig.
