Well they have the Fantasyland Hotel right in WEM...probably your best option.

I liked the Sandman West-ed. Its a few blocks away and is fairly new and is where I usually stay.

It's tough finding a quality hotel in Edmonton that doesn't try to package in a prostitute.

If you want an overpriced outdated stay.

Fantasy Land is $179/night on Expedia.

Worth it?

Maybe. I've never stayed there, so I wouldn't know. It just fits what he's looking for better than anything else. Although there are other hotels very close, I just don't know what they're called. They would probably be more reasonable in terms of pricing.

Like I said, it's tough to say. You can't get any closer to WEM than that, so if cost isn't a huge issue, then I say go for it. Otherwise, look into the hotels that are within walking distance. I don't live on that end of town, so unfortunately I can't help you out much more than that.

For those planning on staying in Mulletville during the summer months, you should book early. Edmonton seems to get a ton of unknown festivals around the "Clone-Dyke Daze" that book all the hotels up solid.

I like the Hilton Garden Inn. The Hotel Macdonald is pretty legendary...supposed to be really nice.

Be sure to take a sleeping bag and sleep on top the bedding in it. Ya, don't want to catch Edmonton cooties.

The first thing to do when you get the Mall is to go to that mid-evil type store and buy some of that chain armour. It will come in handy when someone eventually tries to stab you. If you get the mid evil room at the hotel, bonus you're dressed for the part, and stand a good chance at avoiding anything more than a flesh wound.

I hear avoiding Edmonton altogether has significant health benefits.

I've stayed at the Fantasyland three times with the wife in the past 6 years or so. The first time it was kind of cool to be there. With each repeated visit, the novelty wore off and the spooge stains became more apparent. It also became quite clear that the hotel was overpriced and the service was not what I would expect.

We decided to try elsewhere. For the same price, you can almost stay at the Hotel MacDonald. If you're willing to pay the difference, definitely go there. It's really nice. Classy even. You'll totally score points with the lady in your life.

The last time we went to Edmonton, we tried to find someplace close to the WEM with a pool and stuff for our kid. We tried the Wingate by Wyndham. I have nothing good to say about the place. The rooms weren't very nice. The beds were uncomfortable. The pillows were non-existent (and one of them had a big brown stain on it). Room service sucked (they get their stuff from a restaurant nearby). The pool was freezing cold. Along with us, a bunch of other guests complained and while I didn't expect the hotel to be able to warm up all that water by 10 degrees (it was really that cold) in a matter of hours it would have been nice for them to at least apologize and try to fix the problem. Oh, and although they boast non-smoking rooms, the entire place kind of smelled like a chain-smokers convention really enjoyed their stay there the previous week.

But if you have to go, stay away from BP's. Or at least bring a condom or two.

We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott downtown last time we went up for a game, it was pretty nice, not that close to the mall though, we just took the train to the game last time.

- For a fancy night, the Fairmont Macdonald is where all the famous people, visiting hockey teams, and royalty stay at. I think it's closer to $300 a night, but there are occassional specials. It's a Fairmont, so all the lux associated with a 5 star hotel is there

- The WEM hotel isn't bad per say, but the theme rooms are over rated and over priced. If you get a standard suite, they aren't bad. Comes with an attraction pass as well to use at the mall. I did really enjoy the Sunday brunch at the hotel restaurant

- There is a Delta hotel on the Whitmud that is near by West Ed for a cheaper option

other good downtown hotels include:

- The Westin (a block away from the Fairmont)
- The Marriot (Right beside the Fairmont) - Best patio in the city that over looks the river valley
- Delta Central Suite - The hotel in the downtown mall

Not close to WEM, but both the Metterra (Whyte Ave) and the Matrix (downtown) are nice hotels that are a little more interesting than a standard hotel room. Rates were good at both the last time I was at each.

The last time I stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel was back in the early 90s when I was a young whippersnapper. Seemed pretty cool at the time, but by the sound of some of the comments, it may not have changed much since then. And what was cool in 1991 to a 12-year-old may not leave the same impression these days.
