Hmmm. This news interests me.
I'll soon be moving to a place about 200kms from the North Korean border, and 400kms from the suspected test site. I hope the lead in the water up there makes me impervious!

A bomb shelter won't do you much good against that new nuclear dynamite!

On 660 news, they just reported that NK has apparently tested a short range nuclear missile in addition to the underground test earlier today. Yikes!

Look for South Korea to start investing in their own program. At the very least they'll be looking to the U.S' anti missile defense programs.

I don't think that Kim is crazy but he doesn't care about his people so deterrence is no big deal to him.

I doubt that the American's can give in on a threat to North Korea, it was different when they were trying to prevent their nuclear program. Now they have the bomb technology and the missile technology, for all purposes they're in the nuclear club now.

But North Korea remains "years and years" away from having a weapon it can put atop a long-range missile like those in the United States, Chinese or Russian arsenals, said Walsh, the international security analyst.
"Nothing good" can come from Monday's test, he said, "but it doesn't mean they're going to have a real working nuclear weapon tomorrow or next year."

I don't agree with that, once you have the bomb technology building the actual weapon is a matter of math.

The North Korean's have two out of the four steps done.

1. build working bomb.

2. design delivery system

3. marry bomb to delivery system

4. manufacture.

North Korea is over the tough parts. I wouldn't put it at years and years. I'd put it at a year tops because the NK know that the race is on and the bomb guarantees security.

Thing is, that's all the bomb guarantees. They're a weapons system whose purpose is to never be used, but just sit there threatening everyone with the possibility of use.

No one is going to get nuked. Ever. I'm calling it now.

I wish I had your optimism.

Your right we haven't opened the nuclear pandora's box since the second world war. However in the great scheme of time nuclear weapons have only been around for a very short period, and they for the most part have been held by rational nations that have something to lose in deploying them.

North Korea to me is not a rational nation, and we don't know who is going to inherit that government when Kim goes to his reward.

We also know that Kim is cash desperate, its not beyond the realm of possibilities that he sells the technology to other irrational nations or groups. If he can manufacture weapons materials, and the incredibly precise switches that make a nuclear bomb possible, he can sell it.

The more that the nuclear club opens the more that someone who doesn't have something to lose will use that weapon.

Every terror weapon or deterrent weapon is eventually used. chemical weapons have been used fairly freely even though they are more of a strategic and non discriminate weapon, biological war far has been used before. Its only a matter of time before the ultimate arrow comes out of its quiver.

Am I the only who still finds it absolutely hilarious that Bush was invading Iraq with claims of Saddam's intent to build WMDs all the while Kim has been basically shouting "HEY! LOOK OVER HERE!!! WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING IT!!! HEY!!!"

I've never really understood how the American government can say "we're allowed nukes but you're not".

I'm not anti-American at all but I've always found this to be hypocritical.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think North Korea should have nuclear weapons at their disposal. Not with Il's finger on the button.

Did they condemn France for this a while back?

There are lots of countries in the world with nukes besides the US.

NK has a tyrant at the helm. Anyone who isn't insane wouldn't want him to have nuclear weapons.

I don't understand that some people don't understand that the United States is a liberal democracy with a functioning system of checks and balances that essentially cripples the use of top-down Presidential power except in the circumstances of extreme danger or contingency.

North Korea is one of the last remaining political god-head cults left in the world. It views its own people as little more than pawns and the rest of the world's people as enemies.

Well, are you gonna aruge with the guy with the nukes?

That's pretty much how that works.

Unfortunately it's one of those things you can't uninvent, so they're better off to try to keep others from getting them at this poing.

Just read "The Aquariums of Pyonyang" - A very fascinating memoir about someone from North Korea who was sent to a camp and then escaped.

That country is messed. Messed right up.
