Each to their own. I totally get why people wouldn't want a tattoo, but being one who harbors 5 of them, i also totally get why people do want them.
As previously mentioned, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, there's no need for put downs for either side.
Take it easy on the narrow mindedness please.

Just to be clear, I'm not one of the people judging against tattoos!! I just personally haven't been able to find a place on my body that's both private enough for me (i.e. not showing at work) and that I think will still look good in 25 years.
I've been fairly liberal with my piercings over the years though. They felt less "permanent" to me I guess.

I appreciate that Peanut...you were actually the only one i was NOT referring to...so, thanks for saying that.
I'm totally with you on finding a place for them, all of mine are in places where i can hide them if i want to....or not if i don't want to.
So, i totally get wanting to find a place to put them that you deem appropriate.

Just curious- any tattoo owners here that have had theirs for more than 15 years, and it isn't something sentimental like a lost loved one?
I just think of what I would have gotten had I decided to 10-15 years ago, and I'm just not so sure I would still be keen about "Save the Jets" being etched on my body.

I got my first one about 14 years ago when i was 19. I still love it, and those who've seen it are only those who actually know me. They all agree it's totally me and describes my personality to a tee....which is exactly why i got it in the first place.
That said, i do know people who have tattoo's that they wish they never got. My cousin for example got a tattoo of a skull that looked like it was drawn by a 5 year old. My brother used to have a pic of it on his phone...i don't know if he still has it, but, it was bloody hilarious.
He's since had it covered up by much cooler art that looks really amazing.

i covered up my spit and ink prison tattoo with an even bigger spit and ink prison tattoo. The problem is that I'm running out of spit and the drug store won't sell me those cheap bic pens anymore.

I have a tramp stamp. I got it before anyone, AFAIK, called it a trampstamp, totally inadvertently. Seriously it was cool to everyone I knew at the time.
...Wait, is this the confession thread?

You clearly take this topic very personally so I'm going to try to tread carefully here, but honestly, of course people ask you about your tattoos - they're huge. I'm curious though to know if you think people ask you about them because they like them. If I knew you I'd say cool tattoos man because it would be mean and socially unacceptable to say anything but that. It's pretty unlikely everybody actually likes them though. Do you concede that they are a topic of conversation for some simply interested in the psychology behind doing something so dramatic to their body?
Anyway, take what I said with a grain of salt. After all, this is the interwebz.

Of course I'm not particularly mad, especially not at your original post, what gets to me usually is the stereotype that goes with it.
Generally when someone mentions one of mine, it is a compliment at first, then they go on to discuss what they have, or would like to get, or that they think mine looks really good but its not for them. Of course not everyone is going to like them, and I am fine with that, you have to expect that and I do. I guess I just find the psychology behind why people don't like them, very interesting. I also find it interesting that some people need to express their opinion. I certainly don't walk up to women with short hair and say, wow, I HATE short hair on women (just for the record, I don't).
You know as far as the psychology behind it, I don't think its thats dramatic personally. There is a long history of tattooing, etc, in the world. For myself, I knew at a very young age that I wanted to get tattoos (got my first one almost 11 years ago), can't explain it, I just knew, I come from a great home, I'm university educated, and I work in a professional field that is difficult to get into, let alone certified in (although I do hate wearing the shirt and tie to work ).
I guess I just don't understand why some hate it so much I keep mine hidden at work. When others wear golf shirts some days, I don't. I keep it out of sight to most of my coworkers. Really though, why should I? REALLY? Its just artwork, and ink, seems like a really trivial thing to hate and judge people on.
Do not assume the person is trying to be different, or impress people ( I myself am too old for that crap these days ).
At the end of the day, I think people need to lighten up, if its not offensive and it makes the person happy then good. It tells you absolutely NOTHING about the person.
Also if you don't like the tattoo, just say nothing. People have their opinions and thats great, but I certainly do not need someone to validate my tattoo(s).
People don't like them I get it, I really do, that is fine. If someone asks and wants to talk about them I will no problem, if someone doesn't ask I assume its not their thing, and we don't need to talk about it. The same as if a guy chooses to grow a ponytail or a woman has really short hair, I don't feel the need to give them my opinion, whether I like it or not ( I really have no issue with either ).

This might be the dumbest thing I've read on this forum.
People walk up to him and ask about his tattoo's because they feel socially, they have to?
Do you ever read back your posts and think "damn, that's really f'n ######ed".

No offense to AFireInside, but I would not want to honor that particular image by permanently etching it into my skin.

Different strokes for different folks obviously. Do not make the assumption that this particular image has no meaning to me, it may or may not. Does not really matter at the end of the day.
Just for the record this tattoo does have meaning. Obviously its not as direct as a portrait or a dead relative.
It is possible for an image to have meaning without being direct about it. Maybe Halloween has a special place for me for a particular reason, so I like the imagery. Maybe my family business is growing pumpkins, no one knows except myself.
It's ridiculous to try and figure out why someone has a particular tattoo or not. We do not know what events have happened in their life to make them choose a certain image or theme. Sure there are those that put zero thought into them, but many put a LOT of thought into them. It is impossible to know until you know that person.
This goes for anything, why does someone choose a certain car, or house, or haircut.

I give you an F in reading comprehension. I said if I knew him I'd say that; not if he was a stranger passing on the street. If he was my friend and just got that ink done, I can gaurantee you he'd pull up his shirt and say something like "check this out" to which I'd reply "cool tat man." It would be rude, hurtful and pointless to say anything but that to a friend.

which leads me to ask the question...
since I dont know much about tattoos...
how do people do those tattoos that look like prison ones as compared to the nice ones that you get done like a professional.
Obviously I can see there's a huge artistic difference but how do they do the ones in prison?

I couldn't agree more. Short hair on chicks should be criminal.
Look, like it or not, people are going to judge you becaue of your tattoos. They are going to see an angry pumpkin on your arm and wonder what it means, what it represents, etc. Without even knowing you, they are going to read into what your ink means - in other words, they are going to prejudge you. It's impossible not to.
For me, I prefer to have more control over the way I'm perceived instead of in a way that I think is one dimensional. I can't be summed up in one image on my arm, but people are going to assume I can be if I had that tattoo. I'm not saying you're one-dimensional, either, just that by putting that on your arm, you're a walking billboard advertising you. And you apparently relate very closesly to pumpkins.
Your artwork looks nice as art. I don't understand why that can't be your computer desktop background or a picture on your wall. Putting it on you body does not seem like a good plan to me, but obviously it doesn't have to be a good plan to me since it's not on me.
Now to tattoos in more general terms - I'm sick of them, that's all this thread was about. I think they are a boring topic of conversation, but people I know seem to think they are unendingly interesting and deep. I reject that.
Also, like somebody pointed out before, nothing is more ridiculous than hearing somebody complain about money problems shortly after showing you their new tattoo. THAT, is truly ######ed.

Get a needle, grab a pen and use the ink. Dip the needle in the ink and stab yourself a thousand times using dots to form words or images.

I have mixed feelings on tats.
I myself have one that I have wanted to get for a long time but for some reason I keep putting it off. It wouldnt be visible to anyone unless I had my shirt off as I would get it written on the top of my back.
I dont find them attractive at all on women - to me it decreases thir attractiveness.
