They keep cranking them out, and people keep caring less.

Somewhere on the internet I saw a comment by someone wondering how long we're going to be using the floppy disk icon for Save. Kids younger than 13 or so probably already grew up after we stopped using them. At some point, people won't even know what that thing is.

They'll know that it's "save", even if they don't know why.

Yeah I hate when people bring that up - by the time Windows (and hence the PC GUI) was becoming mainstream, you had to have a hard drive to run it, which was where most people saved their documents anyways.

It's the same thing with copy and paste icons, which make no sense for an MP3 editing app either.

As long as they are the same everywhere, it doesn't matter. Its the consistency, either in appearance, or in meme (eg. this floppy icon looks different, but I know its a floppy, so its save), that counts.

and in case you think that any old icon will do for the same thing...just try to use the SAP GUIs.

not only are the SAP GUIs crap, but the confusion for the average use who is familiar with windows/apple interfaces is one of the reasons why people hate SAP.

with respect to the amendments in office 14/2010, many of the improvements relate to how everything interoperates. big deal for home users? not so much. but it is a big deal for those who need that integration in an office environment.

seriously though, the basic functionality of word processors and spreadsheets isn't the big deal...it is the ability to easily use the tools and do things across applications that matters.
