Marshall out

As expected, it appears free agent power forward Donyell Marshall won't return to the Toronto Raptors next season.

Not suprising. We now have a crapload of forwards and no way the Raps would spend cap money on him when it is needed for younger players.

Does this make the Villanueva pick more understandable?
meaning...they knew this Marshall guy was gonna bolt, so they added a body up front?

Well we knew that they needed a PF or C as they were going to lose Marshall, so picking a big guy always was justified.
Does this specifically justify picking Villanueva? I don't think so. Still the wrong guy. No problem with the position but not happy with the guy they selected to fill the need.

Well, you may not like him but him and Graham led the summer league in scoring going 1 and 2 respectively. I know this does not gaurantee they will be any good at the NBA level but it shows they are one of the best in thier draft class. Also, they have outplayed Pape Sow in both scoring and rebounding.
Might as well add that it has been reported the Raptors will sign Jose-Manuel Calderon. Point gaurd from Europe.

This is just another dumb move by the raps.
There was no way in hell Marshall was going to stick around. We all knew that. So why didn't the Raps at least try to get a pick to help one of the many many teams trying to get him before the deadline (Philly, Cleveland) just to name a few.
At least they should have gotten something for Marshall... this is absolutely pathetic.

Maybe, maybe not but it all depends on what was offered to Babcock. They probably would have had to take some big contract back this way and I doubt Babcock would want to buyout another player unless it was a contract with one year left. Atleast now his contract is gone and we have extra cap space.

One of the best of their draft class right now, who knows in 5 years when it will actually mean the most to the Raps.

^ Thats what I'm saying. No one knows who's gonna be a star or who is gonna be a bust. When people say he's the wrong pick, they make it sound like they know who is gonna make it big. I was just pointing out how he is doing compared to others in the draft.

The only Marshall trade rumour I heard was him and Jalen Rose for Eddie Jones. So much better off this way.
As for Charlie and his summer league play, I am liking this pick more and more. The only reason he dropped was because of some presumed "attitude" issues. Everyone said he has the skill to be a top player. Hearing him talk and how he even admits before yea he wasent in the right mind set but has really matured, shows how far hes come. Not to mention the guy wants to be a Raptor and really likes it there. He's just the kind of guy Sutter would look for, someone who wants to be a Calgary Flame and is willing to work hard.
So it's pretty certain Rose will get dumped considering his huge salary. so do the Raps dip into the free agent market or what? What does everyone see them doing from here on out?

Really Mike, there were a couple teams looking to make a run and were looking right in the direction of Marshall.
If Babcock sends out a league wide fax saying the first person to offer me a 2nd round pick gets Marshall, you'd have a 2nd round pick within the hour.

Why would we want another Second round pick?? We already had two.
I would rather keep for the rest of the season and lose him for nothing then get a second round pick for him.

Because a 2nd round pick is a 2nd round pick, and that draft was considered deep and more of a crap shoot where the person with the most picks probably will win.
Personally I'd rather have a 2nd round pick than have Marshall play on a losing team that is going nowhere and you know that it is going no where.

Who would the raptors have finshed last season with as a back up PF? Sow?! The raptors couldn't just trade Marshall for a 2nd round pick, which they wouldn't need anyways, and have nobody on there bench to play the 4 or 5 with any skill. Yes they were out of the playoff race wayyy before the deadline but stil....

Sure it could be possible but then again we already had 2 second rounders and Babcock's relationship with the fans already wasnn't great.
Say Babcock trades him for a 2nd, you don't think there would be fans angry that the Raptors could've made a push to the playoffs? We were in a good position or atleast on a roll at the time.
It's Toronto, they'll always find a way to bitch about the team. I'm sure the media would be going on and on about how Babcock doesn't want this team to succeed that is why he let him go for nothing basically.

So it seems that Babcock has been out-maneuvered again. This time by a european GM: as Mike posted, the Raptors have been pursuing Spanish PG Jose Calderon; now, Calderon's old team has replaced him with Raptors prospect Roko Ukic. Four year deal. I'm back off the Babcock bandwagon.
