Mulroney: Victim or Crook?
Anyone following the inquiry into Mulroney's dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber?
I have to admit I have a soft spot for Mulroney, he's a strong personality, lots of charm, he represented Canada well on the international stage, he's fiery at times, he's an excellent communicator.
Still, someone of his intelligence and stature had no need to be taking piles of cash for dubious purposes and hiding it in his safe.
And I don't buy his victim pitch. "I hid it because of the Airbus Scandal".
For some reason, I still like the guy, but I say he's probably a crook, even though there are big gaps in the evidence against him.
I'll admit I'm guessing. But I think if the whole truth were out he'd be in a lot more hot water than he is now... like in jail.

I too have a soft spot for Mulroney but there is no way he is a victim in this.

having seen the ugly side of immigration cases, I think Schreiber is pulling out every greasy stop that he can afford to avoid spending the majority of the remainder of his life in jail.
Do I think Mulroney is clean? Probably. That's also because I expect former policitical leaders to go into the consulting game after they are out of office, so what he did was expected from my part. I see where people would get upset with it though.
But Schreiber? This guy has zero credibility. Is milking the system and the scandal addicted media for everything it is worth. He should have been deported years and years ago. I hope that they deport the before the inquiry is even over. In fact, if it wasn't a the same government as was the former Prime Minister at the inquiry, I think he would already be gone.

killer_carlson, I agree with you that Schreiber has limited credibility, if any at all, but one thing that strikes me about him is how he seems to draw a line with everything he has said. He never actually drops the hammer on Mulroney. To me its like he's holding back.
Granted, that holding back might be for his own purposes, but he's already going to go down on fraud charges in Germany, I see no reason he'd protect himself here.

I doubt he's completely clean....but he's not a crook either.

I doubt he's a crook, he was maybe greedy, and he is being taken advantage of right now by a desperate and experienced conman.

People with his experience know better than to accept bags filled with cash. Crook.
The sad part of this is he is probably less of crook than any of the other PMs we've had in the last 40 years.

I don't see this as news, they pull it out every time there is nothing else going on. The CBC seems to have a bit of vandetta on him, let it go already. Charge him with a crime or drop it. Very boring.

How do you blame the CBC for this???? The left-wing media strikes again! Is that it?
Sorry to disappoint, this is a House of Commons committee called by the Harper government.

Victim? Crook? I'd say both.
Schreiber appears to be nothing but scum and will thrown anyone (including innocents) under the bus to save his own skin.
That said, there's a reason this book was written (which I haven't completely read):

He may have mistakenly done something that is illegal and may have to pay a fine (or something). I don't think he is a crook.

I'm more upset that Harper has totally distanced himself from Mulrouney just to save is own arse then I am at Mulrouney himself.

Yes he mistakenly took a bag full of cash.... That's how large business transactions always go down isn't it?

Sorry, don't follow the Canadian press as closely as I should, we're not talking about Brian Mulrouney right? That guy ruled when I was a kid.
Edit: seems we are. I absolve him of all wrongdoing based on illogical reasoning. All politicians are crooks and just some get caught.

Yeah, I was watching it on CTV.
I vote crook and if he isn't, that was one huge pile of blarney he was feeding to change the subject to how he was being so disgraced by this inquisition that doubted his integrity.
I must say, I never liked the guy and people forget when he went out he was about as popular as Bush is today. He just about destroyed the Conservative Party.

Crook... and this isn't the first time I thought so.
Having said that, he is a politician and it's not a matter of "if", but "when" they become crooks. Give them enough time, and 99% of them will find some way to bend the rules for their own personal gain.

Name a Prime Minister that wasn't a crook. Harper just hasn't been out of office long enough for the exposure to hit.

Well I can't think of any criminal charges against Trudeau? (I'm running for cover as soon as I finish typing...)
