Default A few questions for the 45+ crowd

Hey guys, were are putting on a retirement prep seminar at work, and I have a few questions if you don't mind participating. We are targeting the 45+ crowd because they are closer and more cognitive of retirement.

What are your 3 biggest concerns when you think about your retirement?
  • Preservation of wealth?
  • Financial Freedom?
  • Succession? (Estate planning, passing on wealth)
  • Retirement properties? (home, vacation spots)
  • Security? (Maintaining quality of life you are used to)
  • Bouncing back from the "recession"
  • Other (please post)
What are you going to do in retirement? (new job, volunteer work, take classes, travel, write, etc)

What time of day would be best for you to attend such a seminar? (Evening? Afternoon? Morning?)

Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, CPBT!

Hey, I'm probably your perfect person to ask. I'm in my...let's say I'm over 50 and leave it at that. Plus, I'm a financial planner who has lots of clients over 45, as well. I talk to these people about objecives and their money so I'm well acquainted with how over-45s feel about these things.

I'll post my objectives:

1. To grow my money at an above-average rate or return.
2. To create the best retirement lifestyle for my wife and I within the next 15 years-plus (I plan on working for a long time yet).
3. to provide a lasting legacy for my children and yet-unborn grandchildren and to assist them financially and otherwise during my lifetime and afterward.

My objectives are a bit different than my typical over-45 client because I'm a little more aggressive than most of them are. I could tell you how other over-45s think, if you like.

In retirement I plan to travel lots, work part-time in my current business and spend time reading and learning (I enjoy lifelong learning).

My best times to attend something like this would be weekday noon-hours or Saturday morning.

I've actually done seminars like this as part of my financial-services practice. If you want advice on this, PM me. I can also give you an idea of how 45s-plus think about this. I doubt there are too many people here over 45, probably a few but not a whole lot. I'll send you a PM. Good luck.

What do you consider an above average rate of return?

yuk yuk.

Although they should be euthanized if they want to call it a day. Man I know a lot of old people that are bored out of their skulls and just sit around waiting to die. I've noticed this usually happens around the time great grandchildren are born. Then they totally have a redundant position in the family and nobody really wants them around as they're slow and kind of a hassle in every way.

That's sad. And totally off topic.

I tell my clients who are into equities that over 10 years or more they should get 8-11%, depending mostly on their timing. Buy in at lows like this and your chances of the top end are excellent. If you were unfortunate to buy in last summer, well tough luck and over 10 years you should see the low end. If you get over 10%, I'd say that's above average. If you're thinking you can do much better, you're carrying a ticking time bomb. You may, or it could explode in your face.

As for those who think that over 45 is old, you're pitiful. I'm about a decade older than that and I know that middle aged and rich >>>>>>>>>>> young and poor.
