Anyone remember the
Hugo trilogy for PC?
Hugo's House of Horrors (1990) [later re-released as
Hugo's Horrific Adventure] was classic. The subsequent sequels to round out the Hugo Trilogy were pretty decent (and increasingly difficult!!) as well.
Hugo II: Whodunit? (1991) [later re-released as
Hugo's Mystery Adventure]; &
Hugo III: Jungle of Doom! (1992) [later re-released as
Hugo's Amazon Adevnture].
I thought these games were nuts when I was in Grade 5. Typing in every imaginable word or phrase in order to progress to the next area was torturous pleasure. The storyline seemed strangely compelling, while also challenging. Hours and hours of fun!
Maybe the craziest part is that the developer, Gray Design Associates, ported the game from Windows to DOS very early on, and has continued to update/tweak new releases for compatibility to newer OSes ever since. On
their official site, the entire trilogy (incl. the DOS
and Windows versions, and indispensible hint/answer book in PDF format) is available for $10 direct from the developer as an instant download. It even works w/
Vista (maybe even
7!). Not sure about 64-bit platforms.
Alternatively, you can download any one of them for free as shareware
here, or just play online (I and II only) to experience
Hugo without the download.
Here are a few screens of the first installment of
Hugo. A short review of it is
here.
