One of the best quotes of seen about twitter, is that "There is No Winning in Twitter".

Lots of people on Twitter are calling themselves social media experts; and are using twitter to justify their jobs and their follower numbers to justify their "expertise".

Hence why you'll seem some suit in San Fransisco following you with a 1,200 followers or following 10,000 people. Typically for unknown followers, I'll look at what they post; if it's relevant or informative I'll try following them for a bit. If it's just dozens of RT every day I'll just ignore them and let them follow me.

Anyone following over 1,000 people a day is probably not going to have an opportunity to digest anything that's said, so I wouldn't worry about it being used in the wrong light.

So I signed up for this tonight so that I can receive news and sports updates. Is the best way to get updates through text messages? Or is there a good free iPhone app?

Edit- And it appears I am not getting text messages anyways. I am on Fido, and tried to send the code to them, but I am not getting any messages.

I believe bell is the only carrier that allows text msgs with twitter (don't know why).

I use Tweetie for the iPhone. It isn't free, but it's only $3 an works pretty flawlessly.

Oh ok, their website says they use all major carriers, but I guess it must be up to the companies to allow it or not. Thanks.

It's only Canadian Carriers. All the American carriers allow SMS. (Apparently the cost of sending out SMS messages in Canada was too expensive) Bell so far is the only one to cut a deal with twitter, but apparently last week both Telus (maybe) and Rogers started sending out tweets and notifying by phone.

I've been using TwitterFon application for my iPhone for about 2 months now and I have no complaints. It's never crashed on me and does a great job with text only posting, as well as photo attaching posting. I do recommend it.

So I have a stupid question: Is there a way I can flag a term so I get a tweet whenever it is mentioned? For instance, if I have an interest in #yyc traffic can I set something up so whenever #yyc traffic is mentioned it gets put in my public stream? I realize I can just search the term, but it would be cool if it could just be sent to me.

On Tweetdeck, at least, you can set up a persistent search. For example, I have one that returns results for #ABLeg (Alberta Legislature). As people tweet with that hash over the course of the day, the search is updated and a list of such messages builds over time. You can search terms other than hashtags too.

Thanks! I've been using twitterfox and have been looking for a reason to try out the Tweetie application for my mac. I guess I'll give it a go.

... And lookie here. It seems that I received my first SMS via twitter this morning. Surprising that Virgin Mobile has the feature available now.

So to answer your question it looks like Twitter has reactivated Canadian Accounts.

So will it send you a text for every single tweet you receive or can you specify?

I was able to specify which I would receive via text message, but I have yet to receive any. After bringing the problem up last night, I did a little bit of research, and it seems that although Fido and Rogers have brought Twitter texts back, I have yet to get one.

Got my first message from Twitter on Rogers from /sportsguy33 (Bill Simmons). But you have to turn 'devices on' for each user whose messages you want sent to you.

Follow my inane twitters about sports /crusaderpi

www.twitter.com/CobraCommander

How dare you anticipate my strategy!

Rented Die Hard. Rooting for Rickman. Related: all Cobra facility air ducts are too tiny for would-be intruders.

London for a cape fitting. Bespoke of course. To call me vain misses the point. I'm simply agreeing with the truth.

What's the OTHER half of the battle, you self-righteous little do-gooders? Naivete? Childish devotion to failed ideals?

Looks like Zarana finally got an acting gig. I'd recognize that motion in the ocean anywhere: http://tinyurl.com/5d8wz2

I see where it says "devices turned off", but I can't seem to turn them to "on". I'm assuming there is something very basic I need to be doing. I sent the confirmation text to 21212, but I never received anything back ... was I supposed to?

The twitter client smackdown is complete! In summary I've found that if I could combine the awesomeness of all of them it would be ... well ... awesome. As I cannot, I've found that all three tested had something very annoying about them. Hopefully some of my cons are misguided and I'm just missing something. Please let me know if I am!

Twitteriffic:
Pros
- Love the notification sound (very pleasing, not intrusive)
- It shows the # of new tweets on the icon itself in the dock

Cons
- Perhaps I'm insane, but I cannot figure out how to search for a term
- Esthetically not as pleasing

Tweety:
Pros
- Most pleasing looking interface
- Can view full conversations
- Can detach a search result and view updates

Cons
- No new tweet notification in dock, only at very top with small icon, easy to miss

TweetDeck:
Pros
- If Maguire was using it, he'd call it a monster
- Configurable columns that store your searches
- notifications of tweets in realtime when they come in
- Translate tweets from any language instantly
- Robust preferences area where you can change many things
- Shows the # of "pulls" you have left in the hour (twitter only lets you run a refresh a certain # of times in an hour, if you exceed that # you have to wait a bit)

Cons
- After the tweets come in and you get the 3 second notification there is no other way to tell there are new tweets ... not even something in the goddamn dock! (perhaps you've noticed I really like that feature)
- Only one account at a time
- It's not a tiny little program, in fact it's kind of a hog.
- Notification sound is both annoying and unchangeable (I think).

What's kind of frustrating is that each client has a con that's almost a deal breaker. Twitteriffic can't search or update with search terms while Tweetie and TweetDeck have poor notification. For now I'm going with TweetDeck just because it seems to be the best organizer of the group.

Two other recommendations to follow:

@Astro_127 is training for June 13. He’s not in orbit.

@Astro_Mike is in orbit. His tweets are very cool.

CobraCommander is one of my all time favorite fake accounts. I love that he's survived through all the Christopher Walken/Brian Burke Controversy.

His comments about the new Cobra Commander action figure were absolutetly priceless.

Is the real Cobra Commander going to come out of hiding to complain to the twitter brass? That's not how CC rolls.

It is comedy gold and I'm glad the studio releasing the GI Joe movie and Hasbro and whatever rights holders there may be are not trying to shut this down.

The setting for changing the @replies options seems to have disappeared for me on the twitter website. Anyone know how to change them?
