I prefer to the federal government get out of the business of telling people who choices they should make in the first place.
Especially in regards to family planning.

Like that they shouldn't get an abortion or use birth control?

Like they should go to family planning centers or see their doctor about that.
They can do whatever they want. The government should just stay out of it.

This is good, since abstinence only programs don't have any impact, while teaching them about condoms at least might reduce the teen pregnancy and STD rate.

This is really good new, as someone who went through that abstinence only curriculum, I can tell you that its a complete load of crap. They would basically just lie to you and make it seem like the absolute only option to a successful life is waiting until you're married to have sex.
A few of the things they tried to teach us:
-Condoms only work 70% of the time
-Pills only work 40% of the time
-If you do anal, you can still get her pregnant (I remember this one not making any sense, and another student asked how on earth that was possible and she said "Well you know, its in the general area and there can be... I don't know, seepage?")
-When another student asked how to properly store and use a condom, she flat out refused to tell us, saying that it would encourage us
-Abortions lead to suicide and drug abuse
-They made us carry around fake babies for 2 weeks and do stupid crap like change their diapers and 'feed' them. Most kids would just chuck them in the closet and forget them when not at school, or do things like play catch and see who could harm their doll most seriously. Yup, great learning experience.
-If you practice abstinence, its like giving your partner a new shoe thats never been worn before on your wedding day!
The course finished by making us sign papers promising we'd abstain until marriage. It was a complete waste of time.
Thank you Obama!

Big high five to Obama for this one. I can't stand the abstinence educators. A friend of mine teaches health class in a Catholic school and the stories she tells are scary. Kids ask her very important questions about the proper usage of condoms and other forms of birth control and she isn't even allowed to answer them. All she can say is "the official stance from the catholic church is that you should simply abstain". The number of kids that get diseases or pregnant due to this way of teaching is shameful imo.
I realize what Obama is doing here and the Catholic school system are two seperate things ... I just got a little "ranty".

Thank you Obama!
Abstinence only programs do not work and just leave the students they are supposed to be helping with no information, no knowledge, and a whole lot of hormones.

I went to a catholic high school in saskatchewan and their approach to sex ed was very good.
The general tenants were:
Place a value on your body and sexual intimacy.
Abstinence is the only 100% effective way of preventing the spread of disease and pregnancy.
Condoms are 93% effective at preventing pregnancy if used properly
Birth Control is 98% effective if used properly
I thought the course was very reasonalbe. I think from speaking with other people who went to public schools is that the courses lacked the teaching of respect for yourself and your body.
I think that the concept of promoting abstinence as the first and best choice followed by teaching truthfully about contriception and STD prevention is best. Part of Sex ed has to be teaching is that there are consequences to your actions and you should be fully aware of these riskes prior to having sex.

The course in the public school I went too was extremely lacking.
I swear the teacher didn't want to talk about anything, so he just skipped over everything as fast as possible.

Are you serious? If you have hormones, you should be having sex as much as possible. There are NO risks. Duh, thats why you use a condom. Or birth control.
Nevermind the fact that teenagers who don't talk to their PARENTS about birth control and safe sex are likely not going to PRACTICE safe sex. Who cares what they were taught in school.
In other words, stuff like this should be taught at HOME. Not by the Federal Government.

I agree that teaching at home is the most important aspect but I don't think removing sex ed from schools would be a benefit to teen-agers. I believe (meaning i read somewhere but can't recall where) that there are more unplanned pregnancies in married adult relationships then unplanned teen pregnancies.
I think the school system has to have a role in teaching health. Whether it be making healthy food choices to behaving repsonibly sexually. The general good outways any concerns about parental interfernce.
